'Knife-proof' vest fails, man dies

Associated Press

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (AP) -- A man was charged with murder for allegedly killing his nephew while demonstrating a bulletproof vest they believed could also stop knives.

Amando Aranda, 32, was jailed without bail in the death of Gabriel Aranda, 26.

The two men shared a pint of whisky, drank beer and smoked marijuana before staging the demonstration Friday for a teenager, authorities said.

Aranda took a long kitchen knife and stabbed his nephew in the chest, penetrating his heart, police said.

"The suspect and victim were trying to demonstrate their belief that this type of protective vest could withstand a knife attack," police spokesman Steve Davis said. "Obviously, that was incorrect."

Cobalt, I just followed your link..WOW, that is one of the most interesting threads I have ever read on BF...thanks for that review!

I guess I'll have to buy a Predator after all.

Hmmm, I wonder how a Mad Dog Shrike would perform...

Now, now...
We should all bow our heads in sorrow...

...for the relatives of these two schmoes who will have to admit, at the funeral, to being *related* to them.

Okay, loss of human life is generally regarded as a tragedy, but sometimes (quite frequently, actually) a compelling case can be made that humanity should be *thankful* for the loss of certain specimens.

This instance is a contender for such a designation.

It can and should be argued that if the US military can make such a mistake, then such a mistake is natural to make........
This is not the first time this has happened.....
Any legal experts out there?

Look on the bright side – some lawyer will probably get rich suing the knife manufacture for selling knives with points on them. :p

Thanks, it was fun doing it. Once a vest has been used, it is not reused again, so that leaves some open to testing such as that. BULLET PROOF VESTS ARE NOT MEANT TO STOP EDGED WEAPONS
Many of those old archived threads on BF and KF were really good, especially when you got the entire community involved.

What about "knife " vests such as this:

http://www.secondchance.com/prod.asp?action=prod&prodID=14

hmmm...just re-read it...there is a disclaimer at the bottom

"CAUTION: Although overall puncture, cut and slash resistance of these products is high, some stiletto-like, needle-like or very sharp knives and instruments may penetrate these all-fabric vests. The end-user is advised to determine for him/her-self whether or not these products meet his/her needs."

Wow, these guys are even bigger morons than some might realize.

Why, you ask?

Because every piece of concealable body armor I've ever seen had this warning on the inside:

"WARNING
THIS ARMOR IS NOT INTENDED TO PROTECT THE WEARER FROM RIFLE FIRE OR SHARP EDGED OR POINTED INSTRUMENTS!"

That's a direct quote off of the level II vest sitting in front of me right now.

Only large, thick vests will be able to stop knives or rifle rounds and they aren't concealable.

The warning, of course, differs on each vest, but any vest not designed to stop knives will say so in large letters! Liability, liability, liability. At least the relatives of the deceased shouldn't be able to sue the vest manufacturer.

If there were any justice in the world, the relatives of the deceased wouldn't be able to sue the vest manufacturer because they too would kill themselves off in stupid ways to rid us of their pathetic genes and the damage they can do.

thats funny, in other words that knife vest doesn't stop any good knives it only stops 2 dollar made in china cheapies. And I don't believe someone actually tried to stop a knife with a vest how stupid can people be? The only thing i'd trust to stop a knife is some thick ass full plate mail!

In reference to the Darwin Awards...it's already been nominated for an act purportedly that occured in the Soviet Union - a drunk older guard at Moscow's museum tried to show a drunk younger guard that his vest would stop a knife...which didn't... which earned 'em a nomination.. And I think Snopes.com debunks that one... and might have this one on file, too...I dunno...
