Open discussion! What's your preferred packaging in a knife and why?

I like minimal bulk and reusability with full coverage of the knife and padding for protection. I dislike bulky boxes or lots of extras.

Winners for me are Oz Machine Company with their little Velcro padded cloth pouch/baggie, Tom Krein and a variety of other custom makers who use padded zipper cases.

Notable losers for me are, Koenig, CRK and Hinderer, as the boxes are bulky and also don't fit in USPS small flat rate boxes if you sell them (although you can special order free USPS boxes that are slightly bigger and do fit either).

Minimalist packing is the best. If it’s a zipper pouch or something fancy I feel obligated to keep it so it goes in a tote never to be seen again but takes up space. Something simple like it bubble wrapped in a box that I can toss is much better

I’m not a Benchmade fan, but the 940 I bought was perfectly packaged; sturdy but not-bulky padded box and a cloth knife condom.

Other than that, Spyderco’s minimalist packaging is fine with me.

i dislike all packaging. its basically trash that I can't throw away and pay a lot extra for it. dont need it, dont want it and it takes up lots of room.
Next time you get a sandwich, remember that as the butt scratching, nose picking, crackhead grabs your sandwich by the bread directly and hands it to you 🤣

Jk jk

Yea cut me a break on price and ditch the expensive packaging.

Whatever David Mary, CPK, and/or GEC do is perfect for their respective products is generally advisable for everyone: simple, effective, and easily reused or guiltlessly disposed of.

I don't like paying extra for zipper pouches, molded sarcophagi, display boxes, or whatever additional bulk I'll feel at least momentarily obligated to store.

I've yet to own a GEC, but i love seeing those tubes they package them in.

I don’t mind the cushioned zippered pouches used by LG or Spyderco. Some knives get stored in those or the pouches are used for other purposes, not just by me but my kid and wife too. Admittedly at this point I have so many but I like those. I’m all about tidy compartmentation.

The hankies and non-proprietary tools are never used. Neither is grease or loctite, I’ve got enough of that stuff laying around. Nice box? I think ‘hey, nice box’, and into the garbage or a container in the attic it goes.

I like hanging on to the original knife boxes. Some of them just seem too nice to toss in the garbage. Most of the ones I don’t have a box for are kept in a knife roll. I’m not a fan of the zipper pouches though.

I don’t have much of a preference as long as the knife is securely packed.

What I don’t like is those dang peanuts that some shippers use for packaging. I get them all over the floor just trying to get the knife out of the package. Then when I pick them up and try to throw them away, they cling to my hands from static. They do make for secure packaging but I hate them nonetheless.

I don't mind minimal packaging but I like to feel like I'm getting what I paid for especially if the knife is expensive.

If you don't like/need the packaging, you can just throw it away but I keep all of the boxes/pouches/ziplock bags that my knives come in (and all of the paperwork & swag that they come with) because I'm a collector & I may (or my executor will) need to sell them one day & collectors will pay more for a knife that comes with all of this stuff than they will without it. 🤷‍♂️

My favorite packaging includes CRK & Koenig.

Mid-tier or lower, I don’t much care one way or the other. Those high end knives? If I could afford them I’d want something special and non disposable for display or storage. After a certain dollar amount it’s no longer a tool to be tossed into a tool box.
