I have recently started working with 5160 and have started doing my own heat treat. I have a knife that I finished and heat treated myself. I do not have a way to verify hardness other than file and testing. I want to offer up a passaround with this knife. I would like this knife to go to paying members only. Members who have some knowledge about testing knives and the limitations and expectations of 5160. Members who are willing to test this knife out a bit and report their results to me or in this thread. I would like at least one of the members who test it to be able to test the hardness of the knife as I don't have that ability. I do not want this knife to be tested to destruction. Normal knife chores only.
Anybody interested in the pass around just chime in here in this thread.
The results may be good or bad but I would like to know what they are so I can make changes to my heat treating for this steal. I have had great results with the 10xx steels especially 1075-1084. Since I am testing the waters with other steels I would like some constructive criticism on them.
I would like to get at least four members by the end of this week. Mail it to the first. Each member gets the knife for a week and then mails it to the next. After all have tested. It will be mailed back to me then I will open a new thread for the giveaway to a forum member hopefully by Christmas, assuming the knife isn't a piece of crap.
