Knife philosophy: The folders you really need

When you really get down to it, I don´t think you really need that many folders. I have sorted out my personal must-have-selection.

1. Hiking-camping-forest-folder

You must have a sturdy and strong "survival" folder that won´t let you down.
I HAVE: Benchmade Vex
I WANT: Benchmade 710 (but it´s to expensive for me).

2. EDC-folder
I small and not to tactical looking folder that will fix all your daily cuting tasks.
I HAVE: Benchmade 707 Sequel (I love it!)
I WANT: Small Sebenza (to expensive).

3. Around-the-house-folder
I folder to fix things in the garage, garden and around the house. Can´t be to expensive since this one will take alot of beating.
I HAVE: Leatherman Expanse e33b (nice to have screwdrivers handy).
I WANT: (well... can´t think of any better cheap beater. Real multitools don´t count!).

4. Back-up-folder
A good allround folder to keep in your drawer if any of the others break.
I HAVE: Benchmade Mini Grip 556
I WANT: The new EKA Swede 10 (haven´t found it yet).

That´s all you really need! Cheers!

I want: one (1) stinkin' pocket knife that will handle 99% of my cutting needs day-in and day-out, so I don't have to pick and choose, that will look good and perform admirably in most any situation!

I have: more knives than I can shake a stick at:D I think I have a problem:o Still, it's fun looking for that one...

I love Benchmade, but I don't know if I would use an axis lock knife in a survival situation. I suppose if one of the omega springs broke you'd still have a second one, but it seems like it'd be very easy for dirt to get in, and it'd be very hard to clean it. I think if possible, I'd go with a fixed blade, and if not, I'd go with a framelock that's easy to take apart and clean, like a sebenza.

Obviously you have not yet acquired a Sebenza. ;) :)

I HAVE: SnG
I WANT: Umnumzaan
(I think i'd rather have a fixed blade? or is that not an option?)

2. EDC-folder
I small and not to tactical looking folder that will fix all your daily cuting tasks.
I HAVE: BM940
I WANT: Small Sebenza and/or Strider PT

3. Around-the-house-folder
I folder to fix things in the garage, garden and around the house. Can´t be to expensive since this one will take alot of beating.
I HAVE: ZT350
I WANT: Multitool? SAK?

4. Back-up-folder
A good allround folder to keep in your drawer if any of the others break.
I HAVE: BM710/Kershaw RAM
I WANT: Large Sebbie?

The OP forgot

5. A gentlemen knife for those dressed up moments
YOU SHOULD HAVE: a Mcusta or a Moki or a GEC
YOU SHOULD WANT: a Klötzli or a Mnandi

6. A kind of SAK
YOU SHOULD HAVE: the classic alox Soldier
YOU SHOULD WANT: the new Soldier

I'm keeping things as simple as I can despite my desire to own more than I need. Here's what I have now:

1 fixed blade (Eddie White Custom being made now)

1 Large folder: Large Sebenza LE in Box Elder Burl

1 small 'gents' folder: (ok, 2): a Case sway back jack and a custom sway back being made for the summer.

That's all I want/need.

If I had to break it down into as few categories as possible...

I'd need:

A Work Folder (Something that can and will end up being used every single day at work)
I Have: A Kershaw Cyclone
I Want: A Kershaw Cyclone. I'm good to go! :D

A Gentleman's Folder (Something relatively discreet, slim, and compact that will see relatively little use)
I Have: Kershaw Leek 1660
I Want: A nice Laguiole slipjoint knife

Also, a good fixed blade for outdoors.

To my mind, once you have more than that, it becomes a collection :D

I only need one knife.

I have not yet determined which one it is.
So I keep buying more.

I just can't understand why people who're looking for a do everything blade can't focus on the Emerson Persian.
Pocketable with no sheath, needle sharp point for delicate work, with a simply lovely sinister razor sharp edge for slicing and dicing it is truly a do everything knife for those who don't fear the reaper.
I can whittle a birch branch with the best of 'em. Or silence a sentry in the shadows,
I slice bacon or sheer silk with the same slick blade.
I can penetrate 5 layers of clothing or shave arm hairs like Gillette.
With a baton, firewood is slivered and fatwood is tinder ready.
It's EDC and I just can't understand the reluctance of everyone else (save Haze) to GET IT.

Haha, that's it right there! I keep telling the old lady "this is it honey, this is the one, my last folder, it IS the end all be all" Really, I'm convinced it is too, lol.

1. Hiking-camping-forest-folder
You must have a sturdy and strong "survival" folder that won´t let you down.
I HAVE: Victorinox Outrider. A FB (usually a machete) does all the abusive tasks while the folder does a folder's work.

I small and not to tactical looking folder that will fix all your daily cuting tasks.
I HAVE: Spyderco Military
I WANT: Spyderco Stretch 2 or Gayle Bradley

3. Around-the-house-folder
I folder to fix things in the garage, garden and around the house. Can´t be to expensive since this one will take alot of beating.
I HAVE: Victorinox Outrider (again)
I WANT: To add a Byrd Wings to that.

4. Back-up-folder
A good allround folder to keep in your drawer if any of the others break.
I HAVE: Spyderco Delica4 and Delica2, one FRN and one SS
I WANT: A PE D4

(5) Gentleman's knife
I HAVE: errrr...SAK is about as close as it gets.
I WANT: A Spyderco Kiwi, or a nice traditional.

That´s all you really need! Cheers!

I've noticed that I only need one folder and one fixed, since I only carry one knife at a time. If one fails you have the other as a backup until you buy a replacement.

Most important factor for folder is that you like it enough to carry it everywhere.

Most important factor for fixed blade is that it is comfortable enough to use for extended time.

The other factor is to know how to sharpen a knife.

Of course, I have more than two knives... :D
