Here is a knife I just made out of a horseshoe rasp. Thanks to Bruce Evans for his tutorial on how to make mortised tang handles. Tom Lewis

Neat!
Does that make a pretty nice blade? The guy that shoes my horses said the rasps he uses are made with mild steel thats been carburized after the machining is done, can't make knives out of them. Don't know if they're all that way now or not. I know they used to be tool steel.

Another amazing piece of fine craftsmanship. Thanks for sharing. Between your's and Bill Buxton's astrology knife - I don't know what to think. Super work. RL

Very nice! I've made a few but they all come out ready for the ugly knife contest.:D

thats one fine looking bowie. seeing the rasp pattern in the blade is what got me interested in knifemaking in the first place. have'nt made one in over five years now!

Very nice, fella! About the question on the rasp, the older files do make better blades if you just want to grind out a file or rasp for a blade. I have been told the newer rasps and files are only surface hardened,ie; the teeth. I've made a couple of blades using an old file and an old rasp. The file for myself for cutting old carpet, the rasp on request. It must be a quick factory trick, the surface hardening.

Nice looking knife. I use the old horse shoes to make letter openers. They don't hold an edge for a knife but work fine as a novelty item. Low priced table filler at shows just for the impulse buyer. I sell mine at an art gallery. I have not been to a show since 95.

Tell your buyer its not a knife. I have a little info sheet at the gallery.

Thanks for the nice comments. This must have been a older rasp because it came out of the quench very hard. I have also heard about the surface hardning on modern rasps and was concerned about this one, but I think it came out ok.
Bruce, I don't know about MS next year. You really raised the bar high this year with your knives. I'll see what kind of extra time I have between now and the Atlanta Blade show.
