I've been both buying and selling more knives lately, and I'm realizing that having pictures of my knives is a handicap. Plus, sometimes I'd like to share my new acquisitions with the Bladeforums community. What do you folks with a little experience in the realm of digital imaging think would work better for shots of knives? A flatbed scanner, or a digital camera? I'd like to stay around $200. Thanks in advance for any and all opinions.

A digicam works best but I've been scanning my knives all along. I always say I am in the market for a cam but it seems that something else I want always diverts that money :D I guess for "quick and dirty" pics, a scanner works good but you always have to contend with funny hues and such...

The only time (IMHO) a scanner is ever better then a
camera is when your scanning paper for OCR (Converting to text)

Otherwise there lighter, fast, and you don't have to be
pluged in (on most cameras) all the time.

But most of the time you can get a higher res.
level on a scanner for the same price, but as with
most thing just because it's rated high doesn't mean
you'll get a better picture.

Try to learn about cameras don't just go buy one!
Go someplace like CompUSA, BestBuy.....(If possible)
and plan on NOT buying one that day, Just look! :)

Thank you both for the input. The major reason I was thinking of getting a scanner was for the higher resolution, and the fact that I wouldn't have to mess around with lighting, etc. as much, but if scanners end up with funky colors, than that's not really important. And it's definitely true that a camera would be much more versatile. Any suggestions on lower-end cameras that have decent resolution? Thanks again.

My sister has a fuji finepix 1200, it cost $150 and takes pretty nice pictures for a camera in that price range. But I haven't used it to take any knife pictures so I don't know how well it works for that ;)
