The more I use a folder, the more I realize I prefer small fixed blades as an EDC. Has anyone else discovered this?

I find myself carrying a 6" blade traditonal more than my tactical folders.

I find myself being more and more disinterested in blade steel or other materials and much more focused on geometry. My main carry pieces are pretty humble. I'm a hard guy to impress these days. :)

I do still carry a folder (one of my two favorite BM's or one of my Gun Hammers), but I often find myself reaching for one of my fixed blades. Got into knifemaking too, and now I'm mainly carrying my own stuff. I EDC this blade these days:

You carry a 6" blade as an EDC? Or the OAL is 6". If the blade is 6", does it get in your way? I'd love to see a picture of a typical EDC you wear, if it isn't too much trouble.

I've never been too concerned about the steel itself. So long as it is better than Alphabet soup, I'm not too picky. I'd like to try out vg-10 though. What kind of FB do you carry? I'd be interested to see your humble EDC's. I am very much into clean lines and good geometry.

Beauty! Did you make it? Do you have a FB that you favor over all others? One knife to rule them all, as it were.

Cheers,
Timbit

I carry an Opinel No.8 Carbon and a Cold Steel Pocket Bushman. Sometimes the Opinel is swapped with a Case swayback and when I think I may have some extra hard work to do I'll carry my ESEE Izula. For non-pocket carry fixed blades my most used knife is a Condor Rodan. More often than not I'm hacking away at something with one of my machetes. The Mora #333, Condor Viking, and--of course--my Baryonyx machete prototype are what usually see the most action. I keep an ESEE-3 on my pack strap. And I have many other knives at my disposal when I need it, but they're all very carefully selected for specific properties or advantages.

Nope. My chores can be done with basic folders. While I work a desk job, I know that plenty of farmers and ranchers have worked decades in the outdoors with only a slipcase knife.

My Dad and grandpa grew up on a farm using opinels, so what you say is true! For me, It isn't a matter of whether a folder or a slipcase isn't as GOOD as a fixed blade at cutting chores, it has more to do with the tactile (not tactical) feel of the handle and blade. I have a razor sharp Delica that I frequently use for basic chores, and it does the job just fine. When it comes to extended use tasks, I just prefer using a FB. I have a couple of opinels that I enjoy using in the garden but I'd rather use a Mora. Just my $0.02. Thanks for replying!

It is great when I see people carrying damascus blades, I think people underestimate them.

I've always been secrets envious of damascus steel. I've never been able to find a blade profile and geometry that was in my price range.

I used to have your dilemma. I love fixed blades, but I also love carrying a flipper.

Solution? Carry both

What makes you prefer a folder over a fixed blade? Don't get me wrong, I love folders. I think they are very cool looking and convenient to stuff into a pocket.

Love the thought and design that goes into folders. They are practical to carry and handle all of my edc cutting tasks. Besides there are so many different lock styles, blade steels/shapes, designs, etc. to choose from.

I still carry a folder but carry an Izula or Blackjack in my back pocket behind my wallet.

They barely stick out of my back pocket and are easy and fast to deploy.

A good knife begins with a secure and comfortable handle. To me that usually means a fixed bladed knife, although I have a few folders around to use for light duty around the office.

I love carrying a small-ish (7"OAL) FB when I can, but I can't always get away with it. I loop a D ring thru the belt loop and attach it to my pants belt loop. Then I stick it in my back pocket.

Yep, I made that one. Amboyna burl handle, made my own mosaic pins, damascus from Alabama Damascus. Right now it's my favorite. Others that I've carried and liked include the BK11 and the Bark River Bravo Necker 2.

There are a LOT of great EDC blades out there, and you can have one made to your specs as well. Small knives usually aren't too expensive.
