It seems that any non-Busse knives that I find really appealing to me have Busse characteristics. General blade shape, handle construction, utilitarian style. Example, Entrek Javalina. Maybe it is the engineer in me that likes functional, tough as nails, utilitarian design.

I have encountered only two exceptions to this. One is my ultra-thin JSP
Arch Angel. For some reason I love that knife. Another brand that really appeals to me is Ruana, and I intend to have a classic Ruana hunting knife.
Beyond those, however, it is always something Busse-like, so I just usually buy Busses.

Now I'm going to have to go look at some of the knives you've mentioned out of curiosity!

In folders, I tend to like (and afford!) Spydies and Benchmade, though the BM' s get more carry time since the ergonomics work better for me.

Fixed blades? Of course, Swamp Rat, but that is a given. I appreciate the work Justin does as Ranger Knives too... I owned an RD9. We all know about the Busse tie in with the RD series. Honestly, I like the Bark Rivers alot too and I can't exactly put my finger on the "why." Maybe it's the spooky convex edge. I've got a Northwind and would really like to have a Golok as well.

Maybe the common attribute in my preferences is that all of these bladesmiths blur the line between production and custom. All of them are proud of their work and stand behind it. That, and they all use high quality carbon steels with a focus on the heat treat!

If it weren't for the Jerry, Justin & Mike's of the world, I might still be supporting the Far Eastern bladesmiths... Pakistan and China! :o
