Knife Price.

I'm relatively new to the world of buying knives on line. I was curious to how Bucks official site charges $255 for the Automatic Buck Inpact but on Blade HQ and other sites I can get it for $159? Are there knock offs/replicas out there?

If a manufacturer sold an item for less than it's dealers, it soon wouldn't have any dealers. They would quit and carry some other brands product. So when a manufacturer lists something for sale it is almost always at MSRP. Dealers can sell the product at any price they want. (They can't always advertise any price they want.) Because of competition the dealer's price is rarely as high as MSRP.

O.B.

Thank you for all your answers. Makes perfect sense. Kinda feels like a stupid question now

Typically manufacturers list at MSRP they aren't much into the business of direct sales and in the market well you almost never find something at MSRP.
This ^. Manufacturers do not necessarily want to compete with knife dealers. There are some fairly predictable % reductions from MSRP at many dealers. Some reduce the price less than others.

Dealers have to be competitively priced.
MSRP makes them look attractive by comparison.
Considering their merchandise probably cost
between 30 - 40 % Off any possible suggested retail.
Price differences between competitors
Can't be particularly huge...

Here's a link to all the paid memberships of BF dealers(trusted dealers you can go to for knives and knife making supplies)

I personally use Knife Centers website to scope out pricing on knives. They even show the msrp and what percentage is knocked off for retail. You will find most production knives you can get for about 30-40% off msrp.
Some brands have a fixed(map) pricing that you never see drop unless they hit a clearance price years after its released/being discontinued. Examples: Bemchmade is 15% off retail, ZT knives 20%.

Thanx so much man! I'd say that will keep me busy for a while browsing knifes. Do you recommend one in particular for OTFs? I'm really interested in the Piranah Excalibur black dagger mirror finish and seems everyone is out of stock that I've checked except for Autokives.com and I see a lot of bad vibes on here about that place so maybe I should stay away. I've used him once and had no problems. Thanx again and hit me back if you have a suggestion and the time.

Correct, except for manufacturers that require unilateral pricing (Chris Reeve Knives), or MAP (Zero Tolerance, Benchmade, now Spyderco and many other companies). They are not allowed to sell for "whatever price they want", because the manufacturer considers it a breach of contract and devaluation of the product. They want to keep things fair across the board from the online stores to the brick and mortar retailers, so the story goes.

I'd recommend reading the forum rules first. Understand this forum is almost 20 years old and has tons and tons of information, some very accurate and other not so much. There is a forum for almost everything here, so posting in the correct forum while remaining within the rules will lead you to the most current and best answers.

I went thru every single one of those sites and could not find a microtech black Troodon d/e 3.8 satin dagger or a Piranah Excalibur anywhere. Totally bummed

I'm really not understanding how they all advertise all those MT and don't have them in stock everyone of them if out of stock. There are a lot of great knife dealers but I guess I'm not meant to get what I want at this moment. Haha

Because MT likely makes them in batches...

IIRC the Troodon is not in production however the Combat Troodon is not sure which you were looking for and last I checked BladeHQ has the Piranha Excalibur in stock.

Not a stupid question at all. This comes up frequently. Usually when someone is new to shopping for knives on the internet. If you've shopped only at stores, a lot of them will charge MSRP. So internet shopping is a different world. Just be careful to buy only from the good websites. Do your research, it just takes a google search or a bladeforums search. Some of the good ones: bladehq, dlttrading, newgraham.

They had a lot of Excalibur's in stock, just not the one I was looking for. But they do now. Just got the email yesterday! Figures, because I broke down and bought a MT Combat Troodon which I'm happy with. It's a swee knife.
