I guess it depends on what kind of knife you're talking about. I've never used a pricing guide. But if you were looking for the best price on common items that would be different than looking for collectables.
Thats true. I recently have taken an interest in the traditional folder style. I have a lot to learn on discerning quality over aesthetics. Thought some type of guide may help with that, not to mention my wallet.
I've never tried google shopping but I have done what hairlesstwinkie mentioned. Though, in doing that it is hard to tell if someone is buying/pricing accordingly. It gives me a ball park but doesn't really take into account nostalgia or aesthetics.
I suppose the "homework" is the fun part and certainly a necessity.
Goins' Encyclopedia of Cutlery Markings is about to be my first "text book". Thought I would pass this along in case another newbie has the same question.
