If you look at the thread "Second Best Heavy Folder"
Both the SERE and Greco folders are mentioned in a good light.
And what follows after that:
---------BANG--------BOOM----------POW-----------
Two separate people ask for the knives on Want To Buy Forum.
I think this happens more often than most people are aware of.
If you read the thread "Do having Makers/Mfqs influence your knife purchases" Most people answered no.
But I think they do, in a really big way!!!!
especially considering that after just mentioning a couple knives are good, folks are rolling over to buy them.
Now think what happens when someone is curious about a knife and they go to check out a Maker/Mfqs and they see a whole line full of true believers!!!!! What do you think happens then????
I think the WTB forum gets one thread bigger, that's what!!!!
Just think about the Sebenza..... I never would have bought one had it not been for the CRK forum (okay, three actually) EVEN though people on the forums were saying good things about them.
How many of you have bought Sebenzas, just to find out what the Ruckus was all about me. (Me)
Any other thoughts?

I think it's classic advertising. People say "This knife is great", and for some it's enough to go looking for one or that have been looking for one to buy one.

I bought a sebenza way before I ever found these forums, circa 1996 or so.

I have bought and looked at the greco knives before i seen any threads on here . I just like them . I only have 2 fixed blades by greco but would love to get a folder and i will soon. I have thought about getting a sebenza , and yes maybe just to see what everyone sees in them. Most of the knives I have bought 95 percent I seen in a magazine webpage or just cought my eye in a store .

I would say that I am one of those that is influenced by certain manufacturers, I have to be. Having to rely on mail order only purchases and not being able to handle a knife before I buy, I tend to keep to just a few manufacturers that I have learnt to trust for consistant quality and reliability.

I've also fallen foul to buying from a single forum thread before  , not so much user recomendations (although those are always welcome), but more on seeing an exquisit looking knife that I was previously unaware of :)

I mentioned in the first thread how much I like the Greco folders, and somehow managed to convince myself to buy one.

Thats never happened before.

Frankly, I tend to avoid most of the discussion that goes on in the manufacturer's forums precisely because they are populated almost exclusively by "true believers" who often seem more concerned with the brand than the product.

There is a point where discussion just devolves into cheerleading.

If you ask for advice on buying a car there are people who (no matter what your requirements actually are) will scream "Buy a Ford" or "buy a Honda" simply because they are so enamored with the brand. These people are more concerned with promoting their chosen corporation than actually recommending a product that will serve your needs.

I prefer to buy knives on their engineering merits rather than the reputation or devoted following of the manufacturer.

What's worse. . .folks that hype a knife in this forum, the custom forum, the auto forum, etc. . .and shorty there after you see them post the knife for sale. :(

I bought knives on looks and by how lefty friendly they were. After coming to Bladeforums I learned a great deal. I started looking at blade steel, locking systems, feedback/reviews from the fans and the critics. I also started thinking about what I really need in an EDC. This has brought me closer to finding the "One", or at least the perfect combo. I like seeing the makers represented here, but by no means do I take it as gospel.

It's called smurfing. Some guys say they can control the forums by doing it. They have someone post about a certain knife. Then a couple of other guys chime in about how great it is. Voila, the next day or so the knives in the post show up here or in Bladeauctions or Ebay. I personally don't care if they do it or not. I'm sure I've gotten some good deals because of this. I also bet it's happening as we speak.

The only way that sort of thing will work here is if the manufacturer can get long time members to do the smurfing. If it is done by newbies it will immediately be looked upon with suspicion. I have seen it tried and it never seems to work.

I have a tendancy to listen to the folks I trust. (Some have posted in this thread, some I have not even met.) If there is a track record involved abusing venues with hype, I tend not to listen at all. A good knife will sell itself.
