Hey everybody! I'm new here so this'll kind of serve as my introduction, as well as a question thread. So, yeah, I'm a 17 year old knife/outdoors/bushcraft enthusiast from Georgia. I've always liked knives, but just recently I've been really getting into the more technical aspect of knives, such as steel material, different designs, different manufacturers, etc... So, I'm really looking forward to hanging out on this forum!

So, onto my question:

So, I just got a Ka-Bar Becker BK-2, and although I am loving the knife, I've got some plans for modifications to the knife. The first thing I'm going to be doing is stripping the blade of the black coating/paint, and the adding a patina. I want to do this to prevent rusting and I just think it would look better that the black. So, the question is what's the best way to remove the black coating? Would I have to sand it off, or is there some kind of chemical that would strip the paint?

Thanks so much!

Welcome to Bladeforums!
There are many subforums here. One being the Maintenance and Tinkering Forum:

You'll likely get more answers and more valid answers there.

I've never tried it myself, but I think folks have found that paint stripper works well. You should remove the scales first.

Stop by the Becker subforum. There is stuff like this happening ALL the time in there. You'll find tips on how to strip the blade, how to strip it but not under the handle, how to convex it, how to modify the sheath into something better, and many more things.

Here is the most recent one I found.

For sure the easiest way to get the coating off is a chemical stripper. Trust me, I did it the sanding way, and it took me like 2-3 hrs, and a layer of skin on my thumbs. When you use a stripper on it, it comes off in like 10 minutes.

Here is a photo of mine with the patina I put on it :).

Alright, thanks so much guys! Also, sorry if I put this thread in the wrong section, I'm still getting used to the layout, haha.

I looked at some of the pics in that thread that ocnLogan posted and It looks to me that the there is still a greyish tint to the blade. It could be poor lighting on the blade, or maybe the stripper didn't get all the coating off. Regardless, that'll probably polish up with some fine sandpaper. I'll head over to the becker subforum and look around for some answers.

Thanks again!

By the way, ocnLogan, that knife looks wicked!
