knife question

I am going to cast my vote for Spyderco. I have not had any luck with Benchmades, dull out of the box and thick at the edge.

I've owned a fair number of both. All of them have been excellent. I think that Benchmade's line is generally aimed higher than Spyderco's, at least in terms of materials. On the other hand, the top entries in Spyderco's line are certainly comparable.

I have heard more complaints about Benchmade's quality control, but my own experiences do not bear that out.

Both companies make excellent products. You'd be way better off decided which particular Spyderco and Benchmade knives you're interested in, and then telling us what you'll use them for, and then asking about those two knives specifically. There are any number of knives I'd give Spyderco the edge on, and any number of knives I'd give Benchmade the edge on.

Most of my carry knives these days are Spydercos (spydercard, endura, calypso jr.), but my favorite 4"-bladed folder ever is a Benchmade (710).

Joe's post is on target. A blanket label for an entire brand is very difficult. I believe that in my time here, I've read more complaints about Benchmade quality by a significant margin compared to problems with Spyderco, but I am a Spyderco fan, and may have a selective memory.

I am more familiar with Spyderco's lineup than I am with Benchmade's. I see Spyderco as having a fair number of knives that are aimed at niche markets, while the Benchmade are more generally or generically oriented.

I think you'd get much more definite answers if you did as Joe suggested. (Of course you could just go buy the Spyderco Wegner or Military, or the Benchmade 710. A lot of folks would think that you had one of the best knives around if you bought any of the 3. :D)
