Knife Reassembly Hack: Rubber Bands

I'm a newbie and I'm not particularly coordinated. Recently, I was trying to reassemble a knife, and I found that I just didn't have enough hands. I needed one hand to hold together a scale, pivot, and the liner lock; a second hand to hold the other scale; and a third hand to screw in all of the screws and the other side of the pivot. Every time I would get close to reassembling the knife, something would fall out of place due to the lockbar tension, and I would have to start all over again.

I couldn't use a clamp, because that would get in the way of reassembly. It finally dawned on me to wrap up one scale and the liner lock in a rubber band, which allowed me to lay down that portion of the knife. Then I could lay down the other scale on top of it, and the lockbar, under tension from the rubber band, wouldn't push away the other scale. Finally, I could put in the screws.

When it was all over, all I had to do was take another knife, and cut away the rubber band, and now the knife was good to go.

I always reassemble my knives with the blade open. This way I don't have to fight the lockbar.

I am glad that you found a workaround. Next time, just try it with the blade opened (carefully).

Another option is to put the lockbar and scale last. That way you can push it in and hold it while tightening the screws.
I usually do it Bill’s way though, assemble it open (for liner lock/frame lock).
If it’s lockback, you need to use zip ties to hold down the lock (if inserting blade is last steps) or put in the lockbar last.
