Knife Recommendation for my Groom

Hi Guys,
Newbie here. I was hoping you guys could help me choose a knife for my fiance as a gift for him on our wedding day. He has Benchmades and I think one Chris Reeves. Usually he prefers to be able to carry them in his pocket but I know he wouldn't mind a nicer belt knife.

I would prefer to get him a nice hand-forged knife. I was looking at a John Neeman, but I'm not sure I can get it in time. Any one have any recommendations? Price point is up to $400. I would even go to $500 if it was really special.

I know he doesn't like carbon steel (like a 1095), and I would like a unique wood or carbon fiber (he likes it for weight).

Any thoughts? R.G. Epting knives are gorgeous but I can't find where to buy one anywhere. But they are probably out of my price range.

Any advice would be appreciated!

How much time do you have?

Also, you mention that you want a forged knife but he doesn't like carbon steel? Almost all forged blades are carbon steel, you can forge stainless, but it's very hard to do and I don't know anyone who does. Do you just mean that you want a hand made knife and not necessarily one that's forged?

I have 3 months.

Sorry I think I meant he doesn't like plain carbon steel? I think he prefers like tool steels or alloy steels. I could be way off on terminology, I am pretty new will all the knife lingo still.

What Benchmade models does he have?
(So we can get an idea of the style of knife he likes)

Not sure whether you want a fixed blade in belt sheath (or pocket sheath), or a folding knife that clips onto front pocket.
All of these are customs from our KnifeMaker's Market on this Forum. You can find some nice custom blades here, and your spending limit should NOT be a problem. Case in point, a photo of part of my collection of new custom fixed blades is below. None are over $350, and some are much less. Each one has a sheath that is NOT pictured. None of the blades exceed 3 1/2" in length. Some small fixed blades can be in a pocket sheath; larger ones hang on the belt. Folding knives generally are clipped into a rt-front pocket or a hip pocket...

I suspect that the majority of folks on this forum carry a folding knife...from blade-length of 2 3/4" to 4" blade-length, made in a stainless steel blade. Some folders exceed a five-ounce weight and might be considered "heavy" for office-carry, and might "drag down" his suit-pants. If Levis...no problem with five ounces.
If for office-carry, consider a blade of 3" or a bit less. A three-inch blade-length (max) is "usually" legal in the work-place and will not scare the ladies in the lunch-room during his break. However, if he opens boxes in the storeroom all day, then he will want/need something capable of heavier work, and the blade-length will likely be longer...perhaps even the fixed blade in some cases.

A folding knife will most likely be in a stainless and will NOT easily rust.
A fixed knife could be EITHER in a carbon steel blade (which can rust without care) or a stainless (unlikely to rust). You need to know that kind of info before you buy.

We would serve you better if we know the following...Is he a big guy with large hands? What kind of work will he do with the knife? Is it just for office-carry and opening a few boxes at home? Will he use it for camping in the woods, chopping, etc?
There may be state or local jurisdiction regs which LIMIT the blade-length of a knife for carry. Some knives (fixed) may be carried "openly" in some states. Other states...NO. Try not to buy him something that he's not allowed to carry...

One fellow (of many) to consider is Alan Davis. Here is a link to a knife he just sold. He can make you a very special folder, or a fixed blade, likely within your time limit. He's a nice guy. I've owned a few of his knives. The bottom fixed blade in my pic is by Alan Davis.
