Hey guys,

Never owned an "ol' timey" knife, and I've never really looked much until recently. I've been eyeing a small, conservative, inoffensive office edc and haven't really been satisfied with anything so far.

Recently I was drawn to a knife in a pic I saw on the forums and did some searching and it turned up this:

Chambriard Stag Compact Theirs Folding Knife

It's a great looking knife! It's a bit pricey, but I could save I 'spose. But I wanted to ask around for other options that are similar:

3 inches or less,
Single blade (not sure if I understand or appreciate multiple blades...)
I am infatuated with stag after seeing pics recently,
I really, really want something that has a leather carry pouch for my pocket, but I imagine I could always add one separately,
And file work is a bonus.

I don't really care what the blade steel is.

So if you guys have any thoughts, is love to hear them as I venture into my first traditional.

Hi, and welcome!
Before others get in and suggest you to look for US made knives (such as a GEC 73 or similar, which would be great options), let me give you an advice.
Get the Chambriard. ;)
If it caught your eye, there must be a reason. And it's a fantastic knife.

Thanks! In leaning that way. If only sites had pics of the actual knife you're buying, with the handles all looking different.

I know for sure that Gunstock Jack's has pictures of the actual knife you will receive.

This always seems to be a factor with stag and such. I don't really like stag, but if I wanted a stag handled knife, I'd just choose a reputable dealer and ask him to take a picture or two, or let him pick the knife.

I sent an email to a company that stocks them in the US (world knives) and asked if they can show me which ones they have in stock or if I can talk to someone about helping me choose.

Very excited.

I agree with Fausto, if this particular knife has caught your eye then it's a good idea to go for it. You want your knife to both suit your needs and be attractive to you I assume, so this should be the one if it fits your price range.

Share a pic when you can :)

I have a Chambriard Compact, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend the manufacturer or the pattern. Mine is in Curly Birch, but like others, I generally like to see photos of the actual knife I'm purchasing when dealing with stag. That said, I've seen a couple beautiful stag Compacts posted here on the forum. Best of luck.

That looks great! Actually I was first drawn to stag, but was *almost* drawn to that one. It's beautiful.

Luckily, I was told is be as to see some pics tomorrow. So happy.

And thanks for the good review. Pretty much seals the deal.

Knifeswapper/Mike/Collector Knives and Derek/okbohn/Knives Ship Free have pics of the actual knife you will get.

That Chambriard is a nice looking knife. I have a small book of knives, an art book put out by a French publisher, with most of the book devoted to European and African pocket knives. I need to take some good pics to share with you guys.

As far as American knives go, GEC does offer some of their 73 and 72 pattern with some nice stag scales, kamagong here has an excellent example of one. Also, check out the #15 boys knife or barlow pattern from GEC, I believe they made some with stag bone scales. Case offers some CV patterns in amber bone, not sure about stag. Queen I believe, had some stag covers on some patterns, not sure which brand under the Queen name or when, but I am pretty sure I've seen them.

Well, I got my first traditional in the mail today. Pretty jazzed!

Thanks for all your input folks!

Handsome knife.

Congrats Robert!

Thanks guys! I'm really excited. I can't believe I've gone from no interest in traditions to it being the only thing in my radar. Hah.
