What would you suggest for a small, lowpriced, high-end steel folder? The emphasis is more on lowpriced, than on high-end steel, but it should be better than 440A

Cold Steel Medium or Large (plain-edged) Voyager?.

.

I have found mine to be pretty sturdy, light-weight, and easy to keep a razor-sharp edge on.

I'd get a Spyderco lockback of some sort. Lot's of good ones to choose from, depending on your taste in style. CRKT also makes some good, lower priced folders.

THey'r making an Opinel in stainless now, its about 12 bucks. Best bang for your buck.

Spyderco delica 98- 4" closed lockback, ATS55(good stuff),zytel handle, plain, serrated, combo edge- you can't go wrong with it at $40
Endura- Same thing only bigger

At the risk of piling on, it is difficult to beat a Spyderco for a good folding knife. You
may want to take a look at CRKT product line as well.

Specifically, I recommend either the Calypso jr. Lt. Wt. (VG-10), the Delica (ATS-55), or Native (CPM 440V). These knives are not much more than Columbia River but the steel quality is far superior.

Unfortunatly I bought recieved a Sebenza about two years ago and though it gets used hard daily I have not had and will not have in the forseeeable future a reason to buy another folder.

Damn

You search for a super tough knife ...find it and the fun is over. Drag.

Anyway to appease my knife fetish at the folder level I buy for gifts. The Sebenza costing what it does was not always within my means. Um I dont know it ever was but I recieved it as a xmas gift. Ok on to the point. Since I dont buy folders for my own use anymore its hard for me to say anything about the new crop, or reinvented crop of manufacturers ie. Crkt, boker and so on. When I bought and when I buy I still think the most reasonably priced, well built, hand freindly knife is the Spyderco. I think the Endura is a buy and a half. A whole lot of knife for the price. Higher up the spydie food chain ... The Wenger has proved itself to me in a year of outdoor use. To tell the truth you would be hard pressed to make a mistake with any of the Spyderco offerings and they have a design for every need or want.

Spyderco makes probably the most solid, hard-working knives for the price. CRKT has some nice 'hi-tech' knives at comparable costs but but for a using knife, Spydies are tough to beat. And this recommendation comes from one who is admittedly not a Spyderco fan

Seb,

Being a huge CRKT fan, I find this hard to say...But...

If you want good steel, small folding, low price...I would check out the Smith&Wesson Baby SWAT. They are known for guns, but this little folder is sweet. I purchased two recently and am impresssed.

3.25" or so.
440C stainless
Bead Blast or black (teflon?)
Frame lock
Washers, One bronze, one teflon
Ventilated frame and clip
Right hand only, I think

Small, small, small, but it takes a scarey edge, has a good clip, and both of the ones I bought lock up solid. I am large, and so are my hands...but, I have no problem with grip, feels good.

Model 3300, check it out!

Forgot the price...

$33.00 to $42.00

Depending on where you shop.

Not bad...

Are the S&W swats really 440C? I found only "stainless steel" as description. A 440C knife for 40 bucks would be cool, though.

Seb

I vehemenently urge you AGAINST ANY S&W knife! They may make GREAT guns..but their knives have a lot to be desired for the money. I gave one as a gift, and although it was "neat" it soon showed design flaws, material imperfections, and even lock failure!

Go with the Spyderco, Native is a bit tougher / meaner than the Delica...I HAVE ALL FOUR AND LOVE THEM!

For seriously hard stuff, go with all stainless, it raises the $$ a little, but it will hold up a little better over time.

Only problem I have ever had was with efficiently sharpening my Spydies, I just send them back and let the pros handle them. It is worth the money. Not to mention the fact that I carried a Delica for years, and it only needed to be sharpened after 3 yrs. & I cracked the tip in cold weather!!!

SPYDIE!!! SPYDIE!!! SPYDIE!!!

Try the CRKT Carbon-Fiber handled M-16 with Acuto 440 steel.

Chang the Asian Janitorial Apparatus

Spyderco Delica, Endura, or Wayne Goddard Lightweight.

And, I cannot imagine why anyone would reccomend or buy any product that has the Smith and Wesson name on it, unless of course Smith and Wesson somehow undid their deal with the forces of socialism.

Seb,
I found the 440C in some online merchants description, can't remember where. I found it after I had made the purchase and was pleasently surprised.

DANGELO,
I agree, most of their stuff is pure crap, this is the only exception that I have found.

MDP,
My knowledge of the gun world is woefully lacking! Maybe you could start my education, or point me to some info?

So okay! Go for the CRKT M-16 or Mirage Grey Ghost, Seb!
