Knife Recommendation

Hey guys, I am looking for some recommendations for a friend at school. I saw he was looking to get a fixed blade, but before he got it told him to wait and I would see what you guys thought was the best knife for its value.

He wants to keep it at $150 or less, but other than that it's purpose is to be just an all around good fixed blade.

Here is the one he was looking at...http://www.cabelas.com/link-12/product/0054175518276a.shtml
*note the price is different (found it cheaper on another site)
Thanks in advance!

Have him look at the custom makers here on this site. JK knives has some great stuff for the money, and a custom blade will hold its value well.

Well, that knife is $229 and it has serrations (which some people don't find much use for). The Alaskan Buck Vanguard is an extremely good knife and made from a very decent blade steel. Your friend might require something heavier if he's going to be subjecting the knife to lots of outdoor use, but then the size and weight of the knife goes up as well.

I'd recommend against serrations on a fixed blade knife and restrict them to folders.

Just about any decent knife your friend finds will do just fine, but knowing exactly what he intends to do with it is essential before a good recommendation can be made.

The Alaskan Vanguard by Buck is a superb choice for
general use.

As your location is in the States, I would say Rat Cutlery as well. Best price vs quality. Or tell him to save some bucks more from his pocket money and go for a Fehrman (starting from USD 180). Or a Spyderco Temperance, a fine fixed blade from Spyderco. I haven't handled that one myself yet, but heard some good stories about it.

RAT Cutlery RC6 doesn't have quite the same sex appeal as the Gerber dagger but it is more function for less money. Worth a look for sure.

I just bought an Ontario Marine Combat SP-1 for $25. It's new in the original box. I recommend the Spec Plus line. It'll perform with the best of them.

There are a lot of great all-around fixed blades... any further limiting factors that your friend can contribute? It would seem he's in the market for a fixed combat blade... so my recommendations would be...

First off, the trident isn't a bad knife - from what I hear anyhow. Supposedly has a great, one-of-a-kind grip. Gerber's Mark II is also pretty popular.

I'd also recommend looking at RAT's offerings - some great fixed blades over there... I drool while looking. :)

If his main criterion is looks, some of SOG's offerings should definitely be recommended - SEAL Pup, SEAL Team, Bowie, etc.

Let us know if he tells you anything more regarding what he's looking for in a fixed blade.

Entrek USA makes some very solid knives for the money. Do a google search and check them out. Nothing fancy, just a solid knife!

He isn't really sure...i'm speaking for him now at least since. He said he needed a nice fixed blade cause he had a number of small folders. If it helps though, I know he lives on a farm, and has to wake up early in the morning to chop firewood, shovel coal in the fire, etc. (in other words, he is an old-school country boy).

All I wanted to do is try to get him the most he can get out of it lol...and that's where you guys come in to play to help

When we were in the computer lab at school, he looked pretty into the RC4 or something like that though, if that gives any leads.

Also, thanks for all the other suggestions

I had said before, "I bet they all say Swamp Rat" :D

Sounds like a real good friend - good luck with the choice... let us know how it goes.

Oh, before I make my exit, I have to say it... FALLKNIVEN!!!! :D
It's just my favorite line of knives.

rat cutlery RC-4. I can't think of a knife I'd recommend more at that price point.

It's just my favorite line of knives.

Unfortunately, Fällkniven raised their prices by 35% recently (don't adjust your monitor settings; it is 35%)! Low rate of Swedish Krones and the high rate of Japanese yen (where the VG-10 and 3G blades are made) as main reasons.

I am glad to have my PXL just before the price increase.

It seems PXL's are on "old" prices still available on ebay. Check it out!
