Let's say you have a knife that has a black coating on it to increase durability, corrosion resistance etc. But you decide you want to have it in a satin finish. Is it possible to do so and what would this be called?

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

I call it sanding. Start with some 320 grit wet/dry and work up to finer grit depending on the finish you want. Sand vertical or horizontal. Have fun and don't rush.

how to best remove the coating will depend on what type of coating it is. what type of coating is it? what knife are we talking about?

I've been wanting to do the same thing to my ESEE RC 4. But I've been afraid I'd ruin it. Any suggestions if I tried it?

i have stripped quite a few coated blades and some coatings are hard to sand off and require a stripper or belt sander to remove, others sand off fairly easy. most coated blades are coated to hide dimples or imperfections in the grind that are left over from the grinding process. if you want a nice satin finish and there are dimples or deep sanding lines you have to remove them first.

its best to start with a 280 grit sandpaper and work up to at least a 400 grit but you can go a little finer but if you use a stripper and the finish under the coating is not bad, you can start with 320 grit. 3m wetordry sandpaper is a good brand to get.
