So I've been slowly going through several knives that were my dads and grandfathers. (I have no idea of any value, and that's not really the concern), but is there someone / place to go to or send them to, to see if they can be repaired / cleaned up. IE, spots on blades, I have one Western brand knife that the guard is loose, etc. I'd just like to have them usable if I'm going to keep them. Thanks

Depending on what needs doing and the type of knife, I’d never hesitate to recommend __________ for work. There are a lot of very skilled craftspeople in these forums who work magic.

Edit: Edited out the name- seems their service provider membership has lapsed, so technically I can’t recommend them.

If you're a tinkerer or even have just minimal mechanical skills (speaking personally) you can probably do a lot of the repair and cleaning up yourself. U-Tube has almost unlimited tutors and there is lots of information available from Bladeforums members (it helps to be specific, i.e., is the handle of the knife with the loose guard stacked leather or other cnstruction?). Most minor spots on the blade can be removed with various metal polishes, although that may affect the value of some vintage knives. But it's a slippery slope once you start down it 😁 .

Spots indicate carbon steel. Carbon steel generally takes a keen edge. Remove the rust and leave the spots is what I do. Carry it about 2 weeks to get a feel for it and then decide what to do.

You should snap a pic, or some pics, upload them to Imgur, and drop the link in a comment to show 'em!

Here is how to post photos
With them we can likely give you the info needed to do it yourself, who can do it or don't bother
