Knife repair question

Hi guys,

I bought an old 2 dot 112 from flea bay that needs a little TLC. Some time in the wonderful knife's past a bozo with an electric engraving pen attacked it. I bought the knife to use as an EDC so a little ruff ness around the edge's was no issue. But, when she came in I noticed that other than the nasty art work.....this knife is in great condition and hardly used.

Now the first question is how would you clean up the marks from the bolsters  Should I just buff the hell out of them or should I sand off the art work and then Buff?????
Second question is they did the same thing to one side of the blade....but, the blade steel is way hard so the art work didn't go to deep in the steel; I know it's hard to see in the scan...but, it's there. How would I get this off of the blade and get the satin finish back???
If It was yours would you do it yourself or just send it to Joe H. and pay his trained staff to give this one a face lift? Comments from every one wanted.

Thank you
jb4570

If it were me, a scotch brite wheel to the blade, the bolsters should clean up nice with some 220 grit hand sanding then just polish everrything back down, looks like a nice project.

I would just polish the bolsters up and not worry about it. The blade looks very nice in my opinion. :)

You also got one with no nail nick. That's sweet.

Hi MM, BW, & Trax,

Will a 3M Scotch Brite wheel it on a 6" grinder??? Where do I get one and as trax tossed out...how much do they cost??? I've also got a nice Old black micarta handled 124 with a scratched up blade....so that project would help defer the cost of the SB wheel.

MM do I just sand the bolsters by hand or should I use a block??? Remember....I think almost everything can he fixed with a large hammer or a saw :). Fine finish work on anything other than wood is not my forte!!!!! But I've got a little time and the will to give it a try.

BW...thanks; I like the no nick look and hard steel. It's not quite the first issue black micarta handle I gave to my older bother back in 72 or 73....But, it will do until I find one of those ;). Oh, and the blade looks worse than the scan when in hand. Looks like my scanner is loosing some of it resolution these days.

 ...John...Texas Knife sells a nice 6 incher with the bushings for $44.00 or so... You do have the motor to turn it right?...:)

JB,
Save the time and frustration, send it to Joe...
They have all the proper tools, buffing wheels, and training...
It will look like brand new again! By the time you buy the buffing wheels,
Joe can have both of your knives mint again! :D
Post some before/after pics please!!!

That's only if he has but two knives to refinish...what if he has 12 knives??? At $6.95 each, that's...uh...$84 plus ~$4.05 each for postage = $132!!!

Do you own stock in Buck Inc.??? You're trying to get him to spend all that when he can one of DarrylS's wheels for $44??? :grumpy:

I wish I owned stock in Buck INC.!!

He said he only had 2 to get "touched up"...

Besides that I have tried the buffing wheel deal you all speak of and it basically cost me a 119... If you arent careful that buffing wheel will drive that wonderful 112 into all kinds of neat things that are harder than the knife :D

Joe will put a factory finish back on it, making it like new. Many guys have posted pics of their Buck factory polished up knives! It wouldnt even be a question if it were me I know they would make it beee-utiful once again! For $11.00 to cover labor and shipping, thats my vote...

I'm familiar with that blade...DarrylS didn't make it clear that it was only the bare, detached blade, not the entire knife, that he was holding to that wheel... :D

Even if it is the entire knife, if not done properly, it will remove it from your hand, I guarantee it :D

Also here is a quote... Makes me scared for JB's safety :D

Right!!!

After those two are touched up, what about the rest of his collection??? They will look shabby by comparison!!! :grumpy:

He'll be showing off his knives with his stubby 3 1/2 fingers and his friends will say, "Oooo...A nice shiny new knife!!!... :D

Darryl, Jim, & Richard,
Darryl,
Thanks for the link to TKS. Very cool stuff....now you went and did it....next thing you know I be taking knives apart to put on some of the cool handle materials they have. Shush...don't let the wife know. If I start to but tools to work on knives......well she will kill me...LOL

Jim,
If I was a smart man I'd listen to you and send them to our resident pro...Joe H. I'll have to think on this for a while.......Ever sense I was a wee lad I always wanted to make some knives......it's never to late to learn something new you know.

Richard,
I've only got three knives currently that need some TLC......however, if I got some new tools and parts it could open a new target on the bay....abused Buck for projects :). But you know I'll be bugging you for tutorials again....LOL.

JB does your wife know basic first aid? :D LOL
Be careful!
Post some pics before and after!!!
(No ER photos though) :D

...You'll never get wealthy from "tinkering" JB...but it's a hell of a lot of fun to make 'em or change them around to the way you like 'em...Trax started me down this road...Let's put the "blame" on him if ya start playin' with buffers and such...and that's just the beginning of "tinkering"...  ...LMAO...

You guy are TOOOOO funny. I've been buffing 110's and 112 on a bench grinder ever sense I was about 12 years old. The funning thing is until I read your horror stories about buff wheels....I never gave a thought that a guy could get hurt on a cotton buffing wheel. Yeah I've had it get twisted almost out of my hand a time or two....but, it still never came to mind that it was probably a close call....knot head in action....WHERE'S MY HAMMER!!!!
