I have a large, old, Camillus toenail or sunfish knife that I would like to have repaired. When I got it it had retrofit wood scales. They were done badly and when I tried to remove them they popped right off -the pins in them were fake and the scales were glued. The backspring also was not properly pinned - had a small cut-off piece of a brass brad (not the right size) pressed into each of the wood scales which makd the backspring loose. I learned this when I removed the scales. Now I have the knife, with just to steel bolsters and brass liners and blades together and the loose backspring. The knife needs scales (original were probably bone) and to have the backspring properly pinned. If properly pinning the backsprind does not return some spring action to the blades, they might have to be repinned as well. The blades seem to be pinned fairly well but considering the other "work" done on the knife I suspect that they might have been improperly repinned.
With all of that being said, can anyone recommend someone who might be willing to fix this knife up for a reasonable price. I only found one place on line and they want the knife to look at and $25 for return postage to give me a price. I realize that it will not be cheap to fix but asking for $25 to mail something that can be sent anywhere in the country via priority mail for a bit under $5 turns me of this resource. Thanks for any suggestions.
