Not too long ago, there was quite a lengthy thread about knife makers' and collectors' attitudes about what is proper or improper when it comes to messing with another maker's knife, ie, altering, repairing, re-handling, etc.

You might want to try and find that thread, because many were outspoken about some of the issues that were raised.

Cleaning and/or repairs are best done by whom originally made the knife.
In some cases a knife will even be de-valued by others working on and/or refurbishing it.

$$ Value aside. It has a mans name on it, most likely one who prides himself on the quality of his work why let someone potentially mess it up? Also it would be cheaper to let the maker do it (I bet it would be free or next to nothing)...

I have used AJH a couple of times. Once to rehandle, (repair..), a factory bowie knife, and once to reposition a guard on an older custom I turned into a user. The work was fine as I remember. I believe the guy's name is Tony, and he was very friendly.. Good Luck, Rich

Guys
thanks for the suggestions.
i do agree with what you guys are saying.
i have 3 randalls and 1 randy lee that need some cleaning.
now Mr Lee was kind enough to clean up the knife for me at no cost.
i emailed the Randall shop but there has been no reply from them.
i was thinking of asking some other maker to clean up the randalls for me.
no major repair work as such.
i am going to try sending the knife directly to the randall shop.ill atleast get some reply from them once they have the knife.
i hope.

Bob,ill lookup the thread you mentioned.

thanks

There is only one maker you should allow to clean up your Randalls....RANDALL!
I have sent several back over the years and they do a great job. They have all the original machines that were used to make the knife, to allow them to do the job properly. Also, should you decide to sell them on at a later date, having them cleaned up by Randall - and you should get some sort of paperwork to that fact - will enhance the value rather than detract. Having said that, if they have collector value (??), maybe best just leave them as they are!
Just my thoughts, for what they are worth.

now this is what i did.i just got off the phone with the Randall shop manager and she did agree to accept the knife for refinishing for a fee.
i am glad i called.
thanks everyone for the suggestions.
