Does anyone have anything on the Fehrmen Shadow Scout..
Looking for pros and cons(if any).
As always Thanks for all the feedback........

They make great knives , I have not seen any reviews on this one but try Hoods woods site by Ron Hood , he may have one . There is a lot of info at the Fehrman page . I have two Fehrmans now and love them , I am looking for a scout now. ;)

I'm supposed to be getting my Shadow Scout today, hopefully. I'll post a short review of my initial impression, once it's in my hands. Then, I'll post another review, after I've had the chance to test it. :)

Thanks Danbo , I look foward to hearing what you think. Its amazing how they get those thick knive so sharp, and there sheath' are great all so.;)

Ok, the Shadow Scout showed up today, and I'm impressed. This has got to be one of the best ground factory/midtech knives I've seen(and I'm a picky bastid). I realize it's probably ground on a machine, but still, it amazes me how some factories put knives out with uneven grinds. This knife is thinner stock than the normal Fehrman at 3/16", so it's also quite sharp. In fact, with a teeny bit of work on a fine stone, it'll soon be absofreakinlutely scary sharp. ;)

This knife of mine also has a very nicely and evenly ground in swedge. I wasn't aware these came with swedges, as the Fehrman website doesn't show a swedge on the sample pics. But, this one has one, and it's very nice.

Overall fit and finish is excellent.

Now, for the negative(if I'm allowed to nitpick a little).

The blade on this knife is 6" and the overall length is 10.5". That means the handle is on the short-ish size. Actually too short, IMO. But, since Fehrman designed this knife with ease of chokeupability(hey, did I just make up a new word?), I can live with the borderline short handle. Folks with small to normal sized hands will find this handle more than acceptable, but I've got big hands and long fingers, so sue me. :p ;) :D :)

I'll let you folks know how it performs soon enough; but, for now, I'll give this one a thumbs up. :)

Indeed, the handle is the same as on the Peace Maker, which was the eventual reason I sold mine--same problem of big hands and long fingers. Someday I may get another, and just get somebody to figure out a bigger handle for me. I haven't tried their big knives, but the edge/blade geometry and and just general design of that Peace Maker were spot on. In fact, I think the Shadow Scout pretty much is a Peace Maker with a 6" blade.

Couldn't have been more impressed with their quality, small handle aside.

Just got mine, and I am also very impressed... the handle is a bit small and also narrow but I like it... mine came very sharp and I think the overall size and blade shape are excellent!!! Cutting edge is actually 5 3/8" on mine... it is also fairly light for its size and handles like a smaller blade...

Fehrman, I have to wonder why more people don't buy them. They are almost the best kept secret in the knife-world.

Thanks sodak! Nice comparsion pic. I have first gen. Howler and like it a lot, but that Peace Maker has been tempting me for a long time.... I used to have a Thru Hiker - great blade. Fit and finish - PERFECT! I sold it only because I didn't come to like skeleton handle and not beacuse it was anything wrong with it - I just need slabs on a handle. Peace Maker looks like a winner. And which one of the three in the pic you like the most?

All of them! Ok, not too helpful.

The Fehrman is my favorite, although I like them all. The ergonomics of the PM are perfect for my hands, but if your hands are bigger, you might not like it as much.

I own a Thru Hiker and I have owned a Peacemaker and Shadow Scout. I sold them because I never could get used to the handle configuration, which I believe was designed so that the forefinger wraps around the choil "trigger" in a choked up mode. If the handle were a little longer so that the knife could be used choked up or with the forefinger behind the "trigger" extension then I would like it better. Overall, great fit and finish and good blade geometry. If you like the handle it is a winner.

With rather small hands - like I have, I had no problem with Thru Hiker handle (other that it being skeleton...). Must try that PM. So many interesting knives, so little money....:(

"lightly chopped into a concrete block" is useful to know. i have and use a Fehrman Peacemaker, and it can happen for example when cutting a shrub close to the ground, that the blade hits a rock just under the soil surface.
so now i'll pull out my "secondary carry" (often a China made knife 'cause i don't cry if i lose it) for a job potentially near rocks. roland
