Kansas state Representative Gary Hayzlett has introduced HB2584 at the request of Knife Rights that would repeal the antiquated ban on switchblade knives and enact knife law preemption in the state. Preemption prevents local political jurisdictions from enacting knife regulations that are more restrictive than state law.

We have received a few emails asking about why this effort to repeal bans on switchblades? For a variety of reasons, it seems some folks don't think that should be a priority. The answer is that it isn't about switchblades, per se. They are a just the most visible symptom of the issue of bad and irrationally restrictive knife laws.

Typically, when we repeal a switchblade ban, in the process we also repeal bans on other knives, eliminate any issue of whether an assisted-opening knife is or is not a switchblade and generally make things better for ALL knife owners. Whether it is length limits or bans on specific types of knives, these efforts are all about freedom. Adding in Knife Law Preemption, when we can, makes these efforts much more effective by precluding local jurisdiction from coming back and enacting their own restrictions. It is a package that provides knife owners the freedom they deserve.
