On Friday last week, Texas state Representative John Frullo introduced Knife Rights' Knife Law Preemption bill, HB 905, that would rid Texas of its patchwork of local knife laws more strict than state law.

Two Texas cities made Knife Rights' 10 Worst Anti-Knife Cities in America list for 2014, San Antonio at number four and Corpus Christi at number nine. San Antonio prohibits carry of all locking-blade folding knives except on the job. There's no local restriction on fixed blade knives. In Corpus Christi it is illegal to carry any fixed blade knife or a folder with a blade longer than 3-inches except when actually in use on the job.

In 2013 Knife Rights Switchblade Ban Repeal bill was enacted, legalizing automatic (switchblade) and gravity knives in Texas (Click for details on what switchblades are legal today in Texas).

Knife Rights will let you know as soon as it is appropriate to contact your legislators about this preemption bill.

Preemption repeals and prevents local ordinances more restrictive than state law which only serve to confuse or entrap law-abiding citizens traveling within or through the state. Preemption ensures citizens can expect consistent enforcement of state knife laws everywhere in a state. Knife Rights passed the nation's first Knife Law Preemption bill in Arizona in 2010 and has since passed preemption bills in Georgia, Kansas, New Hampshire, Tennessee and Utah.

Now this is some legislation that we desperately need to see enacted. I've got friends down in Texas that would be happy to see this actually happen.

Yes, I would love to see this happen.

SA knife laws have always been a little wonky.

Thanks from the lone star state!
Definitely need to do something about those "wonky " laws.

This would be great because in Houston I always have friends in the police telling me " switch blades are a big no-no". I don't carry one but I don't like being told I can't do something like that.

Please come to Philadelphia!
I can carry a glock but not a swiss army knife, it's pretty ridiculous.

Wow, I knew about san antonio, but not corpus. I carry a spyderco h1 everytime I go down there fishing from Austin. Didn't realize that was even illegal. I guess technically I'm on north padre once I hit the island, but still.

Side note, would you think an ultratech tanto or drop point is fine in TX now (not corpus or SA)? I had assumed so, but had someone try to tell me otherwise recently.

I will definitely stay updated on this thread and email whoever I can to help.

Dang when I visited Texas I spent a day in San Antonio and was carrying a locking knife good thing no officers asked about my blade.

No worries, man. I still carry my usual stuff regardless.

I was just in CC this past weekend. Had some decent sized blades on me.

Good work, but has anyone made an effort to attack the ancient Texas anti-bowie "illegal knife" law which prohibits the carry of any knife with a blade more than 5.5 inches long even if you have a concealed weapons permit?

Knife Rights is currently trying to identify a potential sponsor for an all-encompassing knife law reform bill which would repeal the bans on all specifically named banned knives.

Texas is an interesting place to lobby and we have a lot of experience there between our own and our associates' years of experience. Some sponsor’s bills will never be heard and we need to make sure that knife reform bills have the solid sponsors.

We will let you know when a bill is actually filed.

I had no idea Texas had so many quirks. There is no issue with a concealed firearm, is there? Any idea on the history surrounding knife legislation?
