Knife sans shield

I have had a couple of knives sans shield such as a Case 6214 jack and a GEC #25 barlow and I really like them not having one. Not sure why. Maybe it is because it adds symmetry to the knife or maybe without it, it doesn't interrupt the flow of the jigging. Any other folks would prefer slipjoints without a shield?

I don't prefer 'em but I don't mind 'em either. It's not a deal breaker for me by any means on a knife I otherwise like.

I like em both ways. I like some of the older knives that had unusual shields too.

I think it depends on the knife. Some knives just scream for a shield and they look funny, like something's missing. If a knife has some really interesting handle material, no shield can be a good thing.

I made this knife (not for sale) and it has great handle material. One day I'll look at it and think it begs for a shield. The next day, I think it's just fine. I'm not sure I'll ever make up my mind.

Go figure.............

I'm with Elliott, not a deal breaker if they don't have a shield.

Would Love to see some older knives with unusual shields if anyone has any pics.

Thanks!

Perhaps you could make that another thread so we don't hijack this one.

I like shields.

I really appreciate well-executed inletting, and a nicely done shield just adds to a knife (IMHO).

It depends...

When I have some really nice stag, it seems to break the stag to put in a shield.

I have some Rosewood bolsters without shields and they are not missed.

The Queen wood bolsters could do without shields

on smaller knives, shields tend to detract from the aesthetics IMO.
I like shields on larger knives, though.

It'd be nice if Case would offer the chestnut bone swayback jack without a shield.

I like knives sans shields... especially those with stag scales. I think the shield sometimes disrupts the aesthetics of nice piece of stag.

I agree. Last year when choosing between two similar knives by Jerry Halfrich at the Blade Show, I chose the stag version without the shield.

i LOVE ETs with only one blade, feel that the secondary blade interferes with the feel of the beefy handle.
Also, I love my GEC knives called genuine stag w/out shields, though some are better quality than others. I don't know what to do with the "pins" they put in the tube!

My yeller Case Stockman's shield has fallen off, if that counts!! LOL. I kind've like it that way. It adds character.

When I was a beginner knife man, last year wasn't it, I found a Buck stockman with an upside down shield. Oh, I thought I had a one of akind....ha. I have reglued half a dozen that fell off in the storage tray and have seen a goodly number with upside down and with lost shields. I laugh because people come up to me at shows telling how they knew this Buck they didn't buy was a fake because it didn't have a shield. I feel bad to see there face when I tell them that's the way they were made for that issue, it's always gone when they go back........when Buck switched to the BUCK lettered shield in te 80's a cry rose up and they switched back to the original. I believe I heard that the new 'Blue' anvil shields are not loved, or maybe that was only by me.........300Bucks
