Knife saved this guy's life

Hey, I just wanted to tell a TRUE story that happened in the city where I live just a short time ago.

I work in law enforcement. One of the Sergeants that I work with has a 19 year old son that was attacked a few days ago and here's the story:

The son is walking innocently through the park with his girlfriend minding their own business at about 5:00 in the evening. As they are walking along, they see a man walking toward them. He was quite a distance away so they didn't think much about it. As they passed the guy, he suddenly ran at the son and attacked him. He knocked the son down and began bashing his head into the asphalt road! The son's girlfriend began trying to punch the guy in the back of the head, strangle him from behind, and pull him off her boyfriend, all while the son is trying to free himself by any means possible. The guy ignores all the fighting against him and continues to bash the son's head. The son feels himself begin to black out and fears that he is about to go unconscious and probably suffer severe brain damage, or even death. The son reaches for his Spyderco Police knife, opens it, and begins slashing at the guy's neck, face and head. After a few serious cuts, the guy lets go and the son and girlfriend manage to restrain him long enough for help to arrive.

The son and girlfriend made total recoveries from their injuries. The story on the bad guy was somewhat of a mystery. He had a long history of mental illness but authorities never discovered what caused him to suddenly attack two people minding their own business in a park on a spring evening.

I carry at least two knives everywhere I go. I carry them first and foremost as tools, but the possibility of self-defense is always in the back of my mind. After I heard this story, I realized that even in a good neighborhood you just can't be too relaxed. If this could happen to this guy, then it could happen to any of us, our spouses, or children. I have heard many stories where people have gotten in knife fights, but have never actually KNOWN someone who just used a knife in pure self-defense like that.

I know some of you have had similar experiences.

Be safe out there!!

I love hearing stories about knives being used for saving lives instead of taking them...thanks, dude.

Great to hear that some people are prepared compared to those knife-hating, gun-hating, people who normally lack common sense.
I rarely find myself lost in my mind on the streets. I try to always keep my eyes open.

Man! Are there any newspaper stories or police reports online? I'd love to read more about this! I couldn't find anything <a href="http://www.cityofboise.org/police/media/media.shtml">here</a> but I'll keep looking.

Actually, when you think about it, "White" is the absolute presence of every color in the humanly viewable light spectrum (at least true white is). Some colors are pleasant, some are ok, some just suck. A metaphor for this screwy universe we live in.

Wow, that guy is lucky. If he went out, he probably would have gotten killed. Thank goodness for a happy ending.

As Mnblade hints, documentation, please. All us knifeknuts want this to be true, and I'm sure it is. However, if it turned out not to be true, some of us may be embarrassed after presenting it to sheeple we know, sharing at school, work, etc. Not good for the cause!

If you don't know how to link or copy, contact someone who does. Lots of em on BF (just not me!). A direct link or print copy in this thread will make a good impression to anyone casually surfing BF...

Thanks!

TOTC, it worked for me both just before my previous post and just now. Try looking up the 2/7/02 edition of The Idaho Statesman. Maybe you can access it that way. Good luck!

Warrant issued in attack outside Boise Art Museum
Transient accused in scuffle with son of police officer

The Idaho Statesman

An arrest warrant has been issued for a 37-year-old man who reportedly attacked the son of a Boise police officer without provocation Monday afternoon outside the Boise Art Museum.
Michael Todd McGuire, who is listed as a transient, will be charged with aggravated battery after he is released from the hospital, according to a news release from the Garden City Police Department.

McGuire was injured when he was stabbed with a pocketknife during a scuffle with Matthew Walker, 20, of Boise, according to reports.

Walker was walking by the museum about 4:55 p.m. Monday when he was confronted and attacked, according to reports.

The assailant threw Walker to the ground and slammed his head repeatedly on the concrete. During the scuffle, Walker was able to get out a pocketknife and stab the man in the back, according to reports.

At that point, a witness was able to separate the men and called police, Detective Cory Stambaugh said.

When police arrived, they found both men injured, so they took them to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Walker was treated for lacerations to his head and was released. McGuire was treated for stab wounds to the back and was still in the hospital Wednesday evening.

Several witnesses at the scene told investigators the attack was unprovoked.

Walker will not be charged because evidence indicates he was acting in self-defense when he stabbed McGuire, Stambaugh said.

The investigation is being conducted by Garden City police because Walker is the son of a Boise police officer, Stambaugh said.

An arrest warrant for McGuire on a charge of aggravated battery with a $50,000 bond was issued Wednesday afternoon, and McGuire will be charged when he is released from the hospital, according to reports.

FRANK:

Thanks for finding that article! I'm afraid I'm not really proficient at getting links and stuff into posts!

And once again, please be safe out there!

One thing to always remember is that safty and control are only ilusions. Wild animals are always on edge, ready to fight or run. The reason for this is that is they never forget that anything can happen at any time. We as part of the human race tend to feel that we can control our enviroment, so nothing bad can happen to us. This is false and your story proves that. I think that the most important parts of SD is being aware and to be prepared for anything. I am glad to hear that the good guys won! And also glad that the son didn't get in trouble. In this day and age with burglers winning lawsuits against the victims of their crimes for dog bites and other crap it is a rarity to hear a story like this.

STAY AWARE!
STAY PREPARED!
STAY ARMED!

Big thanks to both Frag and Frank ... and to Spyderco! I can't tell you how refreshing it is to read a hero's tale here on the forums and then find out that it's actually not B.S. Someone watch that newspaper and, if the son speaks out in print about how lucky he was to be carrying his knife at the time, please post that here too.
