Hey, I just wanted to tell a TRUE story that happened in the city where I live just a short time ago.
I work in law enforcement. One of the Sergeants that I work with has a 19 year old son that was attacked a few days ago and here's the story:
The son is walking innocently through the park with his girlfriend minding their own business at about 5:00 in the evening. As they are walking along, they see a man walking toward them. He was quite a distance away so they didn't think much about it. As they passed the guy, he suddenly ran at the son and attacked him. He knocked the son down and began bashing his head into the asphalt road! The son's girlfriend began trying to punch the guy in the back of the head, strangle him from behind, and pull him off her boyfriend, all while the son is trying to free himself by any means possible. The guy ignores all the fighting against him and continues to bash the son's head. The son feels himself begin to black out and fears that he is about to go unconscious and probably suffer severe brain damage, or even death. The son reaches for his Spyderco Police knife, opens it, and begins slashing at the guy's neck, face and head. After a few serious cuts, the guy lets go and the son and girlfriend manage to restrain him long enough for help to arrive.
The son and girlfriend made total recoveries from their injuries. The story on the bad guy was somewhat of a mystery. He had a long history of mental illness but authorities never discovered what caused him to suddenly attack two people minding their own business in a park on a spring evening.
I carry at least two knives everywhere I go. I carry them first and foremost as tools, but the possibility of self-defense is always in the back of my mind. After I heard this story, I realized that even in a good neighborhood you just can't be too relaxed. If this could happen to this guy, then it could happen to any of us, our spouses, or children. I have heard many stories where people have gotten in knife fights, but have never actually KNOWN someone who just used a knife in pure self-defense like that.
I know some of you have had similar experiences.
Be safe out there!!
