There was a auto accident where I live in which a mother flipped her car over into a shallow pond. She and her older child escaped but she couldn't free her 3 year old from his seatbelt. Time was of the essence because the 3 year old was submerged beneath the water. Luckily, a pastor from a church acrosse the street came to the rescue. According to the pastor, he has carried a knife since he was 6. The knife came in real handy this day as he handed the knife to the mother who was just able to squeeze into the car and cut the seatbelt, freeing her child. The child is now in stable condition.
This kind of incident can remind all of us that we do indeed have good reason to carry our much beloved blades.

Sorry, I am a computer illiterate, but if somebody tells me how to do it I'll try my best to find a link. BTW, the publication is the "Altoona Mirror" if someone else more knowledgeable can find it.

Note that they may have moved the story by tomorrow. Here is the text, just in case.

CAR ACCIDENT
12/18/2001
Altoona Police are continuing their investigation into a car accident. Around 4:30 yesterday afternoon, Tracy Novak of Altoona, was traveling on Ruskin Drive with another adult in the car and two children when she lost control of her vehicle, which went through a fence and flipped over landing in a pond. Novak, along with Henry Colyer and 8 year old James Novak were able to escape the car. 3 year old Tyler Novak was stuck in the car. Tracy Novak, using a knife supplied by a neighbor, was able to cut the child safety seat, and get the toddler out of the car. All four people were taken to Bon Secours Holy Family Hospital. Tyler Novak is listed in stable condition in the intensive care unit.

I hate to always be the wet blanket (truth be told, sometimes I rather enjoy it), but...

I note that the choice of wording in the story makes it sound as if a neighbor rushed from a house (where all knives should be kept  ) with a kitchen knife (the only GOOD kind) down to the pond to free the child. The story is positive on knives, but only because the role of the knife could not be ignored in this case.

For a real positive (and truthful) telling, the author should have said that the kid was saved with
1)a POCKET KNIFE,
2)being carried by a MAN OF GOD (i.e., not a criminal)

Best we can expect, I suppose.
