Knife saves life

Just saw this, from the AP. My comment: all the quick thinking in the world wouldn't have saved the woman had Mr. O'Leary not had a knife with him and knew CPR.

EASTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) A Massachusetts car wash worker is recovering after a quick-thinking customer cut her loose from a spinning scrubber brush that had snagged her scarf.

Nineteen-year-old Stephanie Carpluk of Chicopee (CHIK'-oh-pee) was released from a Springfield hospital Tuesday with black eyes and welts on her neck.

Her scarf choked her after it got caught at the Golden Nozzle Car Wash. She says she remembers being scared before blacking out.

That's when John O'Leary jumped out of a vehicle on the car wash rails, used a pocketknife to cut Carpluk loose and gave her mouth-to-mouth. Another customer called 911.

The car wash's parent, F.L. Roberts of Springfield, is investigating. Steven Roberts says he thanks the "exceptionally courageous" O'Leary.

My pocket knife is a Battle Mistress! That girl could've lost her head if I was there!:foot:

I'm more impressed he knew CPR. Cutting her loose is only half the save. More people should learn. Go online to the American Heart Association. They have a program called friends and family CPR tht uses a DVD and an inflatable manequin, so you can learn and practice at home with your family, friends etc. This eliminates the pressure of going to class, dealing with strangers. Approximately 10% of a person's chance for survival is lost for every minute they are not breathing and have no pulse. National standard for EMS response is 9 minutes to patient's location, think about it.

CPR would have done no good at all if the victim could not have been cut free first.

This story needs to be emailed to that senator from Hawaii who wants to ban all pocket knives ;)

I'm glad she made it  It's also good to hear something positive about knives these days. Maybe people will think twice before trying to ban useful tools.

+1 on knowing CPR and rescue breathing. Sometimes it's not even the heart that's completely stopped, just the victim needing a little help breathing. You wouldn't want to pound away at someone's chest if they already have a pulse. This gives me a good excuse to go remember the amount of counts done per compression ;)

your supposed to give CPR even if breathing is irrigular and the person is not concious. Just took first aid last weekend.

Lucky girl
