I was wondering how many of you had this happen to them, the oddest of screws go missing on your knives. For me, it was first the pivot screw and washer on my Spyderco Ladybug. Then a few weeks ago a scale screw on my Benchmade emissary is missing. Both kind of out of the blue.

I had a knife screw go missing once...unfortunately the knife was still attached to the screw! /Groucho Marx, I'm fairly sure.

Sorry, thought your thread merited at least one reply 🙂

I tend to write-off screws working loose as something that just happens sometimes. I've noticed it happens with some consistency among Seki City Spydercos (pivot screws especially), but the reality is that any knife can be susceptible to screws backing out in my experience.. my most egregious offender was the pivot screw on a BM 940. In every instance a small dab of blue loctite has done the trick at keeping (formerly) loose screws in place..

Recently happened to me on my Bugout with one of the stop pin screws. Luckily I had a few extras in my spare parts bin and was able to replace it.

Although I've never lost the screw from a knife, as someone who builds knives I have dropped more than a few screws during the production process. I once dropped a screw from a knife I was working on, and when I went searching for it I found a totally different screw that I didn't even know I had dropped.

I prefer screw-assembled knives, and I believe that screws have been a great advancement in knife design, but I'm also sure that they have produced quite a few frustrated, profanity-laden tirades, typically uttered by people on their knees searching the floor with a flashlight. Myself included 😁 .

As a watchmaker Im used to crawling on the ground, searching for far smaller parts. My favorites (sarcasm) are cap stones from balance bearings. I once almost lost a 18k gold screw from the case back of a ladies watch. Eventually found it in the cuffs of my trousers. In that regard Im glad I service mostly clocks these days. So to answer your question; Yes, but not knife screws.

I just wanted to add that if companies like Benchmade and Kershaw didn't make the requests for parts more accessible it could be a real pain to fixup knives. As I know some of the Kershaw's out of China have some odd sizes and thread counts.

For my Ladybug I just happened to have some tiny M1.2 stainless steel socket cap screws and M1 washers.Otherwise it would be a real pain finding a hardware store that stocks such tiny fasteners. The best would probably be a hobby shop. I haven't contact Spyderco about my problem but I would like to hear if they could help.

I have a Katz "Kagemusha" folder that one day I noticed the thumb opening screw was gone. Luckily it happened in my "Office" and I had to crawl around under and in front of my desk as the floor had a thin pile rug, but I did find it and put it back in the blade with a small drop of Loctite. John

While I haven't necessarily had screws go missing (at least while they were in the knife) I have had situations where a combination of very soft steel and permanent loctite stripped the screws. I got to the point that whenever I ordered aftermarket scales I ordered better screws as well.

Edit: I remember many moons ago the pivot screw disappeared from a Cold Steel Recon 1.

I havent lost one yet but I have a large Inkosi thats try hard to change that. I have even locktite them and they are backing out.
