I must say that I have been a long time fan of Scott's knives. I believe the first I ever heard of Scott's knives was from Ron Hood and his Buffalo Knife. I am trying to figure out which knife I would like to have Scott make for me. I am wanting a do it all knife in the 4 to 5 inch range. I will do a lot of bushcraft type skills with it, but I would also like to be able to use it for hunting/skinning as well. A very general purpose knife. I am looking at three different ones, but I am open to any and all suggestions. I have been looking at the Deer Creek, Polaris and of course the 5 inch Tusker. I know many of you own one or more of these and I would like your thoughts on my selection. And of course Scott's too. The one good thing about Scott's knives is that I don't believe there are to many safe queens out there. Thanks for your help!

Of the three, I only own a Tusker I was lucky enough to win that has some history behind it, and a Polaris with osage scales. Both are great users. I never beat them like they owed me money, as some have said :D, but they have gotten some good use. I would like to pick up the Deer Creek. I saw it at Scott's shop, and it looks like a good all around user. Also, I live about fifteen minutes, if that, from Scott, and Deer Creek holds some nice memories for me. Regardless of the name, it is a great design. Tough choice between all three.

Get all three! :):cool::D

I would opt for the Deer Creek.Sounds like it would fill all of your needs. I have filled all of those needs with my Big Boar Tusker.

Of the three you mention I only have the Polaris. It is a good knife and it gets some use. But I guess I am going to muddy the water and say take a look at the mini tusker. I have one and it was my second purchace from Scott. It probably gets the most use of any of my Gossmans except my PSK which is my EDC. Either way you will not go wrong with a Gossman. He is top notch and great to deal with.

It's hard for me to say which is best. I've never put alot of time in with a 5" Tusker only my 8" Big Boar which IMO, can do it all if need be. I've beat on it like it owed me money. :D I've used it for everything from building shelters, limbing trees, busting up kindling, splitting firewood, gutting deer, skinning and chopping down two 25 ft. pine trees.
I don't own a Polaris but K.Estela has used his extensively.
Of the 3 I would pick the Deer Creek. I've used it some but plan on using it alot this fall during hunting season. I really like this design. Feels great in my hand.

I don't have a Polaris or Tusker but I just picked this one up and I gotta say it is one great do it all knife. It really does feel fantastic in my hand and up to any task.

I am finding that my 5" Tusker is always coming out of my pack for duties of all kinds. I have not skinned anything with it but have done some bushcrafting, fire prep, food prep, trailside snack making, etc. Out of the 6 knives I have from Scott, this is quickly becoming my second favorite knife overall. The first being my 10" Big Boar Tusker!!

oeser, that's the Deer Creek aka WSS Challenge knife. This is the design I really like in the 4 1/2" to 5" range. Enjoy!
Looking good snakedoc.

Yeah, the Challenge thread really turned me onto this knife and a friend of mine here had an extra one that he graciously sold to me. I plan to put it to good use.

Fantastic design on this one Scott!

WOW! You guys are making it so hard on me. I think this blade will be used a lot more for bushcraft than for anything else. I think the Polaris is out and I am down to the Deer Creek or 5" Tusker. Scott does a great job on knives, to bad I cannot afford both. Decisions, Decisions, Decisions! I am still open to advice, suggestions. Thanks for all the help!

Between the Tusker and the Deer Creek it came down to blade shape that drew me to the DC. I think you are right in saying the Deer Creek would be better at bushcraft. It is very comfortable to put my thumb on the spine and whittle etc. That and I prefer spear/leaf blades over clips. I really don't think you can go wrong either way.

It comes down to preferance. My 5in Tusker has performed many many bushcraft tasks. It works very well. Whatever you decide, you will get one helluva tough knife from Scott. I of course prefer the 5in Tusker, but im probably biased. lol

If versatility is important, I think the 5in Tusker is equally at home being beat through a knot as it is carving wood tools and making shavings for firecraft. Skinning it will do too. I prefer a smaller knife for game tasks. My UNK has cleaned its share of fish, and I think it would rock as a Deer knife.
