Sorry to do this to you guys, but this indeed, is another knife buying topic. :foot: I'm buying a HI Khukuri to serve as my camp knife, specifically the 15 inch Ang Khola.

As such though, I want a smaller knife 3 1/2-4 1/2 inches, preferably on the smaller side, to serve as a hunting + skinning knife for smaller game. VG10 Seems to be the cheaper but still effective steel but if there's a better type available for my price, I'm not going to complain :) My price range is around 100 dollars and I don't want anything like a C36 Cold Steel. I was looking more at Bark River, A.G. Russel, Benchmade, etc. I like the rounder blades and it def. has to be a fixed blade. Aesthetically it can vary.

The problem for me is that there's just so much available and honestly I don't know that much about steel grades and such.

Take a look at Puukos. They'll serve you well. Most come with one bevel, no secondary bevel, so the edge is quite acute. They're primarily offered in Carbon Steel, Sandvik Stainless steel or a laminate. I've had good experience with both types of steels but have not tried the laminate blades. They tend to come with large, round handles that fill the hand well.

Bingo! I second Vivi's recommendation.

Give Ragweed Forge a look. Wood Jewel is his latest line, really nice-looking knives. I also like the Ahti and Jarvenpaa, all Finnish. prices are well within your budget. As "ethnic" carbon steel knives, they will complement that HI khukuri.

Take a look at the Bark River knives on www.dlttradingcompany.com since they have a great selection. If you don't have a gigantic hand, you might like the Highland Special. If you want something a little larger, go for the Gameskeeper.

Oh, and welcome to Bladeforums! :)

Sandvik 12C27 or Carbon Steel, not sure what kind. I have puukos in both and they've preformed well, I doubt you'd be dissapointed. If so, you could easily sell it to me or someone else here on the forums. ;)

If you're interested in benchmades take a look at the Fecas Gamer, it can be had for under $30 online, and is made with good N690 steel
