My comments:
I've been to several of Tom Sotis's seminars and found them to be quite informative. He is definately one of the better seminar teachers I've come across in the 21 years I've been studying martial arts. His seminars are very well run, and the subject matter is well organized, progressing from technique to technique in a fairly intuitive way. Tom also presents the *concepts* that drive the techniques in a clear, concise way. In my mind, it is this conceptual information that makes an effective martial art out of what might otherwise simply be a collection of techinques.

You can find out a lot more about Tom Sotis and the art of AMOK on his web page http://www.knifefighting.com/ . He also hosts a forum at his site, which can be gotten via various links, or if you want to go directly there: http://www.knifefighting.com/gnk/forum/index.html

Donna,

The Bujinkan Dojo has a couple different classes that run during the week. One is a Budo Taijutsu, which is apparently the Bujinkan style -- I don't take that class, so I know little about it.

The class I do take is called Combative Concepts, which a sort of eclectic mix of AMOK, Pekiti Tersia and various grappling styles. Typically we do an hour or so of either stick or knife, then an hour or so of empty hand (usually grappling). The overall flavor is very much of FMA and the stick/knife portion is pure FMA. Our instrucor Steve Lefebvre is in contact with Leo Gaje on a regular basis. More can be found out about the dojo at the URL mentioned above (including a few pictures from the last seminar Tom Sotis gave in February).

If you want to stop in and train with us for a few classes, give Steve a call -- I'm sure he'd welcome any visiting students.

I'm not sure about anything in particular we have planned in June, but we have the Combative Concepts class regularly twice a week (probably 3/week by June). I'll ask in class tonight if we have any seminars in the timeframe you mentioned.

Hello Donna,

Hello Donna,
In reply to your questions; There are only a few schools that have Kali(FMA) as part of their curriculum(only 4 that I know of). As for the state of FMA in NH, again the level of awareness is there, but it is not easily accessible to the public. I plan on really pushing this aspect over the coming months. I don't believe I am listed in the FMA directory, but that will be taken care of shortly. And finally, yes I am a direct student of GT Gaje, I have not been able to go to the Philippines for one on one with him, but that is being arranged. Currently I forward him video tapes of my progress, and he works with me(through conversation, email or video) on how and what to improve. Grand Tuhon, myself and a few others, are working on establishing the Pekiti Tirsia Global Organization as a major player in the FMA in the USA. I have practiced the FMA since around 1982, with many junior people but now I am focusing on PKT, as my speciality.
Sincerely
Steve L.
