Knife sharpener used on axe

Has anyone used one of these on their axes?

I bought one of these online ($5 on Amazon) and it absolutely sucked for my knifes, HOWEVER, I just used it on my axes and this thing worked BEAUTIFULLY. I started with a simple file sharpening, then ran this knife sharpener (lightly) a few times and, WOW. I might just take this with me for field sharpening for now on.

I've never tried one on an axe, personally. Depending on the shape of the bevel, I suppose some axes would never reach into that V enough to hit the edge. You should get a similar result from steeling your axe edge. Try gently steeling it with a kitchen steel. Works well. Better yet, use a fine ceramic rod (or glass rod like a high pressure sodium lamp).

That's a good idea.

Those V sharpeners are about the worst thing you can use on a cutting tool. Seriously, using one once in a great while may not appear to do horrible things, but long term they can make for an edge that is really ugly. Friend of mine has a fillet knife that he has sharpened for years on a sharpener like that and the edge is rippled almost to the point of looking serrated.

An axe tends to be better sharpened with a file or a diamond stone, then if you want to go sharper you can get out your regular knife sharpening stones and finish it off on them.

A few years ago, before I got into axes, I bought a Fiskar axe and a Fiskar made sharpener which employ's the same technique as the one you have there just in a different format. I've used it a few times on that particular tool with satisfying results. The bit geometry on those axes seems conducive to this type of sharpening. I wouldn't get it near any of my axes now though.

I have gone almost exclusively to files for all my sharpening, except for a couple of convex blades that get a loaded strop.
