I'm getting ready to purchase a set from knives of Alaska, the light hunter combo with stag handles. I'm looking for a good sharpener for this set. I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to sharpening Knifes, but wanting to get started on the right foot. Glad I found this site!

Spyderco Sharpmaker has always done a good job for me. It's about $50 and gets knives razor sharp.

I agree with freedoom, the Sharpmaker is very good when it comes to making a knife sharp, but you do have to have some technique to it. Like holding the knife vertical and such, because you are a novice, and when I was one, you can try those quick sharpener things. Yes, they don't do the perfect job, but its good enough for what its worth. Personally, I run handstones, and you should look into learning that, its great style to sharpen with.
