Knife Sharpening Question Regarding ZT, CRKT and Shun knives

What kind of sharpening skills do you have? What kind of equipment do you have? How much are you willing to spend in the pursuit of sharpness?

If you can already freehand sharpen, it will cost under $100 to get a 3 micron edge. If you can't, then you are going to have to shell out a bit more to get a sharpening system.

I'd recommend using a Spyderco Sharpmaker. It's easy to learn and works well, and most knives (like the ones you have) come with a factory edge that's close to the 40 degree inclusive preset.

Assuming you don't have any prior sharpening experience and don't want to spend $100+ on your first sharpening system, I'd suggest the Spyderco Sharpmaker. It retails for around $50, comes with a good instructional DVD and should allow you to keep pretty much any knife you might have sharp.

i would like to spend less than $100 and i have ZERO sharpening experience. What has me somewhat concerned is the recurve blade on the ZT 0301. Do you think i'll be able to sharpen a chef knife with the sharpmaker? I've watched some videos on sharpening on youtube so i know the sharpie trick and a few others, but i have no real experience.

Shelling out big money for a system that "does it for you" does not make you a better sharpener or even able to sharpen. Besides the tools which can range from a simple 20 dollar stone to several hundred per stone or system it is a must that you learn the basics then practice. The only way to become better is through practice and sticking with the same tools. Blaming the tool or giving up and trying something different are common mistakes and only set you back further in learning the mistakes that were made from the very beginning.

What sharpening method are you interested in?

How much were you looking to spend?

How you go about sharpening the above knives will depend on your tool.

OP here, I think i'm probably going to go with the Spyderco Sharpmaker. Anything special that I should know when sharpening a recurve with it?

Just use the corners of the stones; the dvd will show you how. Nice thing about the sharpmaker is that it's versatile enough to do recurves and serrations.
