Knife Sharpening Question

I have a FBM and an AMS both have a more obtuse edge than I am used to. I would like to have both edges reprofiled to a sharper edge. The AMS will not be used for chopping at all. The FBM could see limited chopping. What are your recommendations for doing this? Thanks

Ron

+10000 for REK!

I've always been pleased with Josh's work. he even has a couple of my blades right now....

I got a ken onion work sharp with grinder attachment....been messing with it, and it seems to work really well - good results so far...FBM you would need the grinder attachment.

Very versatile for big and small knives, folders and fixed blades, and it automatically convexes the edge for you

This is my experimental phase before a 1*30 belt grinder set up like P2.1...

REK's work speaks for itself, and I plan to use them in the future.

I can personally vouch for Ndocyk's work as being top notch from full on full convex re-profiles, to edge work and bead/sandblasting.

The Stripetition finish and edge work by AZTIMT is wonderful too -I have one of his blades that was done for someone else that I picked up prior to any use after finish (top notch).

I recommend 19 degree edges (38 inclusive). I recommend the Wicked Edge sharpening system. I recommend REK for outsourcing the job. Josh and I have been sharpening Busse Blades for several years on the Wicked Edge. I simply wish I had time to offer sharpening services, but with my schedule it’s damn near impossible. Josh is great though and very pleasant to correspond with. Cheers!

Here’s my FFBM:

Can you give more info on REK? I do have a Wicked Edge but not comfortable enough with it yet to try it on my Busse knives. I need to practice on some cheaper knives first. Thanks

I can appreciate not wanting to damage an expensive blade, but with a Wicked Edge it would be nearly impossible to do so, unless you are worried about keeping the same grind line as the factory. If not they will come out looking just like Rob_Mob's blade, minus the mirror polish. I set most of my knives to 19 degrees because of Rob's recommendation in the past, and am very happy with it.

I have a Wicked Edge and always wondered if I could sharpen a blade the size of a Battle Mistress. What setting do you put it on/How is that bad boy positioned in the clamp?

I do my own now that I have a wicked edge.
Takes me about 45 min from start to finish but man do they ever come out crazy sharp.
Wow, it took me way longer than 45 min to reprofile my DTBM down to 15 degrees per side using my wicked edge. I could definitely see doing a normal sharpening job in that time frame though.

I always put medium to large Busse blades as far down as I can. The spine resting on the bottom tightening screw that runs through the clamps.

If you have a wicked edge start on cheap kitchen knives after 6 or so you should be good to go. There are some good videos that can help.

I practiced on one of my beater blades and some other junk I have laying around. I did my TGM and I spent roughly 45min with coarse stones alone on a EP. Thing is, with a blade that thick (tg), taking the angle back out is no big deal but I like the sharpness and don't ever imagine increasing the angles again. Having the tools to do a pro job makes sharpening fun though and chasing that look Rob_Mob pulls off is always fun :D:thumbsup: And thumbs up to the Work Sharp! Have convex will travel:thumbsup: You can feel the difference when it sinks into wood that's for sure.

I'm at well over 2 hours on my Silent Knight, well worth the effort though, that think is awesome when it's properly sharpened.

I would be happy to help as well if you are still looking.

My personal AMS came out pretty sweet:

Wow.... my nmsfno turned out amazing in under an hr.... but when I get into it I seem to get a good rhythm going, i didnt use the leather blocks and paste though, I stopped at the 0.6 micron ceramics.
I typically do 200 strokes of the 100 grit on each side then time 5 min for each grit.
