I was wondering if any of y’all had some tips, tricks, hacks, etc. to sharpening a knife that you’d like to share. Thanks!

Please read the "stickies" which are the threads which are permanently posted at the top of the forum page. Then perhaps if you have more specific questions remaining, we can address them.

Also, please use the search function as well as browse through several pages of the forum's history. There is much on this subject to be gleaned.

No tricks, rub a knife on a stone at the right angle, raise a burr on both sides of the knife to ensure the edge is apexed and then remove the burr. Ensure it is sharp off your first most coarse stone. As Blues said, read the stickies, watch some videos and then have a go. When you have more questions come back and ask.

Try different techniques, and if something doesn't work for you try something else. I tried sharpening with my stones on a table. Ended horribly. I hold my stones so I can see my edge, and I can move the stone and the knife. Some may say you can't be as accurate that way, but my edges sure cut well enough so it works for me.

The best tip I can give is to buy a half dozen CHEAP knives to practice on. Nothing will impede learning or induce self-loathing faster than watching a nice knife be ground to ruin by your own hands.

Read and study The Razor Edge Book of Sharpening, by John Juranitch.

As has been mentioned, there is tons of great sharpening advice and info on this forum but, if you don't understand the few basic and simple principles, any information you get will be more likely to confuse rather than enlighten.
