I have a Spyderco Native with the S30V blade that has gotten very dull. I've tried sharpening it myself, but I'm just not very good at it. Can someone recommend a good, affordable sharpening service I can send the knife to for a nice edge? What kind of turn around do these places usually have?

I think its best to learn how yourself. What are you trying to sharpen with? A lot of people here really like the sharpmaker, but I have no experience with it. I personally use the lansky system and a strop to get hair popping edges on all my folders and free hand my big fixed blades

Learning how to sharpen is a skill you should not be without if you like knives, but for now there are several of us here that could help you out.

I am in the same boat . . . wondering how to get a shaving sharp edge? Can some one point us to good how to thread or site/book/resource on learning this important skill?

I would start out with a Spyderco Sharpmaker, it's simple, easy to use and comes with excellent instructions and a DVD. It's around $50 US.

After that then maybe move up to something like an Edge Pro system. Around $200.

frogger42, i can fix you up or if you live close to concord i have a buddy that lives there that can help you out too. he goes by ArtinNc here on the forum. check out this thread on the paper wheel system. once you learn how to use the wheels you will be able to sharpen just about any knife if its made from good steel. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=578787

Spyderco will sharpen your knife for free. Just send it to them along with $5 for return postage.

However, I agree with others here who've recommended picking up a Spyderco Sharpmaker and doing your own sharpening. :)

Send it back to Spyderco.

+1 for knifenut, "anything worth doing is worth knowing how to do your damn self" you may not always have the time, but you should always have the know how. If you really like your knife, learn how to really take care of it so it will always be there when you need it. It takes time, I still can't sharpen as well as I'd like and I can get a shaving edge.

I am another who votes Sharpmaker. I have one and love it. One thing though, with S30v and other premium steels it is best to touch them up occasionally instead of allowing them to get very dull. Those steels can take quite a while to sharpen when dull.

I have a Sharpmaker and it works wonders. It's basicaly dummy proof, the standard $50 kit will do a plenty good job for most peoples needs, and it's nice to be able to touch up your edges anytimes you need. Depending how much I use my EDC I can go from needing touch ups daily to only once a month, and being able to do it myself makes it worth it's weight in gold.

Spyderco is known for great edges, but Richard J or Knifenut will probably redefine your definition of sharp if you haven't experienced a truly sharp knife yet.
