A friend of mine is a culinary arts student, and a few weeks ago he showed me a sharpening steel he had purchased. This thing is amazing, and I have been trying to find one ever since to no avail. It is not round in cross section like a conventional steel, but rather like a very flattened oval shape. It seemed to be coated with industrial diamond dust or somesuch material, and (he said) cost about $75. I suspect it cost more than that.

Anyone out there have any first hand knowledge in this area?

I have seen buck has oval shaped diamond steels which might be worth taking a look at. Think they were priced between $30 and $40. I haven't tried them so maybe try watching a review or two if there are any available.

Funny I Googled "DMT oval shape" and this is the first result that came up. Google "EdgeCrafter Oval-Shaped Diamond Sharpening Steel #416".
Sounds like what you described to me.

I think Anolon or maybe Scanpan also make one. Since you've joined the forums have a look at the threads on sharpening over in Maintenance Tinkering and Embellishment. Welcome to a pointy new world and buy some BandAids :)

Follow Chris Larrikin advice and head on over the that Maintenace subforum it's where all the sharpening guru's hand out and lets just say we all typically get a little OCD in putting some stupidly sharp edges on our knives. So any questions on sharpening ask over there were glad to help.

I have one that I use for larger blades like machetes or lawn mower blades, Believe I bought it at Ace Hardware.
