Knife Sharpening System

Anyone have any information on this three stone knife sharpening system? I "rescued" it from my father who used it for years to sharpen his butcher knives. He retired and doesn't butcher or sharpen anymore. When I found it, it was in his barn. The reservoir was full of a really nasty mixture of oil and water and had about a 1/4" of solid material that I scraped out of the bottom. Everything was gunked up with grime and residue but the stones appear to be in good condition. I cleaned it up a bit but would like to get it back into top condition so I can use it again. My next step is to boil the stones but I don't want to take everything apart without knowing more.

Hot Water.
Sunlight Soap.
A stiff Brush
A lapping plate.

The stones will be glued to the triangle assembly.

Are they glued or clamped in?

Either way, if you intend to continue using them with oil, I probably wouldn't boil them either.

Cool setup. Never seen it before. :)

Thanks for the advice. I cleaned and scraped and scrubbed with soap and a wire brush and they are starting to look like sharpening stones again. They need some serious lapping now.

Use lots of water while lapping. I usually do my lapping under running water.

I wouldn't use a wire brush on a sharpening stone.

You can clean the stones with USP mineral oil, an auto parts cleaning brush, and a rubber spatula. Scrub the stones with the oil and the brush. Then squeegee the swarf back into the oil bath with the rubber spatula. If you need to resurface the stones, you can grind them on a piece of plate glass in a Silicon Carbide slurry. You can also flip the stone over to use a fresh, flat side.View attachment 388013
