knife sharpening

This has probably been talked about but I can't find a way to search the archives. I'll admit I'm not a knife maker, I just want to keep my knives sharp. I have a small belt sander and a Baldor buffer, but I'm getting inconsistent results. I think I need something with a guide or something.

I'd appreciate pointers to information on how to get myself a clue about this.

Thanks

Joe

I guess it's all in your personal tastes and experience, but I wouldn't allow one of my knives in the same building with a paper sharpening wheel.

I've just seen far too many knives ruined by them.:(:(:(

How? Please explain.

evidently the person using them must not have known what they were doing. i have been using them for 17 years and i have guys who wont trust their knives to anyone else but me. go read these threads and you can read for yourself that they do a good job when someone knows how to use them. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=6289413#post6289413
read what brian jones said in his post http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=6317254#post6317254
i have never ruined a blade and i have probably sharpened enough knives to fill a pickup truck bed and then some with the wheels.

IIRC those baldor buffers are some mean customers, I'm not sure I would use a knife with a full speed buffer, you might look into some type of speed control for the motor.
