Hey all. When i was younger my Dad always used to sharpen his knives with a sharpening stone. One side was fine and the other side was course. He would oil both sides of the stone and then run the blade over the stones and it would come out extremely sharp. However i have tried this method many times and i cannot get both edges of the knife sharp. I also end up putting allot of scratches on the blade itself. Is there another way to get your blades hair shaving sharp without a wet stone? I have heard some stuff about a spyderco sharpmaker but how sharp do those rods really get your blades?

Thanks to whoever takes the time. :D

If you go to the maintenance sub forum, you will find a lot of threads about sharpening, that should help you out.

I think most of us here are looking for the prefect sharpening solution. But in reality there are no shortcuts. I have a Sharpmaker and it is great for maintaining knives that already have the proper edge angle and that haven't gotten completely dull.

The story about your dad goes to prove that it isn't the system but the man using it. I think the key to sharpening is practice, practice, practice.
