I've found I get the best results with a combination of products.
I have no freehanding skills, but if I need to reprofile an edge or a knife is seriously dull, I can get it reasonably sharp with my DMT Aligner. For whatever reason I can't get it to the level of sharpness I want using the just the Aligner though. After I set the edge with the Aligner, I'll switch over to the Sharpmaker and hit it with the white rods or whatever they're called.
I used this process on a knife I made over the weekend to go from no edge at all to hair-whittling sharp in about half an hour.
