Knife sheath other than Kydex and Leather

I'm not a big fan of kydex and leather seems a bit old school so I'm just looking around for ideas for other material to make a sheath out of. I was thinking of nylon but I can't really find much on it.

My plan is to run to a fabrics store tomorrow and see what I can find. Any suggestions?

For fixed blades and anything other than a quality leather sheath or kydex sheath, I would definitely encourage a thin kydex or similar liner. Nylon works great...there's a plethora of options in nylon sheaths out there, but a sharp knife will not even know it's there. Ask my finger...it found out the other day when I was cutting a nylon strap with a very sharp knife...5 stitches later and it's good as new.

The reason you see mostly kydex or leather is that they are pretty much the best out there for ease of construction and good function. Wood has been used for centuries, but has its complexities. I'm curious to see if you're able to find anything else out there that will work for you. Keep us advised!

I think you are right about the nylon being cut very easy. Maybe if I sew in a leather liner I'll get what I'm looking for.

There are a lot of ways to make sheaths and use different materials. This one is nickel silver lined with pig skin.

This one is kydex, lined with doe skin and covered with crocodile skin.

You might get some heavy nylon belt material like utility and gun belts are made of and make a liner of kydex.

How about a wood scabbard?

Nylon is a great sheath material, but it needs a liner. And the best liner would be kydex. ;)
