Hey everyone, I'm looking for some insight on shipping a Swamp Rat Rodent 6 I sold on eBay. The buyer is located in NYC, is it legal to ship knives to NYC, I've read a lot of conflicting information, and I have noticed that some large online retailers do not ship to NYC. Does anyone have the definitive answer to this? Thanks!

New York is tricky. The laws there are so muddled its very confusing.

It is the buyers responsibility to inform you of any laws restricting the ownership of his new knife.

That said, I believe I know it as he cannot carry said knife but can own it? Someone should come along with the answer.

We do have a Knife Laws section here you might browse through, theres some good advice there consistently.

do you have it in the fine print the whole "buyer's responsibility to know his/her own local laws blah blah blah..."? If so then don't worry too much about it.

I did not specify this in my auction, which is my fault. I did not even realize there could be a legal issue shipping to New York until someone mentioned it to me. I'm just going to issue a refund to the buyer, and relist the item. I just don't feel comfortable, because there is soo much grey area.

If you dont have it listed, you should follow up with an email to him/her and state that you need that person to explain to you that it is legal for you to ship it to him. You should also state that "it is the buyer responsibiltity....." and if that person doesnt do that, also tell him/her that you will issue a refund and relist the knife. If that happens, then modify your auction details to include the fine print! :D

Yeah this is what I did, the buyer offered several childish responses, but nothing official that cleared my conscious about shipping the knife to NYC. Which also leads me to believe he is fully aware of the laws and is clearly frustrated by them himself. I felt like he was trying to coerce me to send it. I apologized, refunded his money promptly and relisted the knife with shipping exclusions. Then he called me a punk, lol. Whatever, I just can't risk something that is potentially illegal. Thanks for the responses everyone!
