Hey guys, I'll be i the Santa Cruz area for the next couple of weeks. Was wondering if there was anything in this area I should check out. I have already tried Armor Geddon in San Jose, I didn't find anything that I really fancied there.

Santa Cruz is the land of hippie, pot-smoking, vegetarian, anti-weapon, lesbian, hairy-armpitted surfers. Weapons are not terribly well liked in that political environment... You can find mainstream stuff next door in Capitola (e.g., Outdoor World sporting goods and Merlo's Cutlery in the mall), but nothing worth going out of your way for. Down in Carmel there are some old-rich-guy-having-a-mid-life-crisis-with-a-sports-car-and-young-girlfriend tourist stores that sell knives. Carmel Cutlery is a decent small knife shop, with an inventory including Al Mar, Spyderco, Benchmade, etc. and some with meteorite blades that appeal to old rich guys on vacation.

I happen to love Santa Cruz, but agree it does not have a good knife shop. There is an Outdoor World at 136 River Street with a small selection, I've bought a couple there. You can also check out Bugaboo Mountain Sports on Pacific, but it has a very small selection.

If you get up to San Francisco, We Be Knives on Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf, is worth a visit. No bargains, but a nice selection.

If you come through Fresno in the 99, stop by for a knife show and some hospitality. PM/email for my phone number.

If you're in San Francisco stopping by We Be Knives, might as well stop by TAD Gear (www.tadgear.com) also. They're a Strider dealer with some productions and usually have some interesting customs in stock at any given time. If you're willing to go to San Jose, check out Stevens Creek Surplus (http://www.scsurplus.com). They have a decent selection of Spydercos, Benchmades, SAKs, Emersons and others. It's really close to Santana Row.

I was going to say We Be Knives, it is a good stop in San Fran. Stop and get a bowl of chowder too.

I know several people in SC who hit on multiples from this list. Still, it's a pretty easy town to get laid in, and they have good seafood.

Yes very good seafood, I ate at the Miramar on the wharf last-night. I ordered steak and scampi, cut my steak with one of my Bokers and to my surprise, I didn't even get any weird looks.

Thanks for the generosity CM, but I don't think I'll be heading that way this time. I think I'll hit up Outdoor World today, thanks guys.

I love how knife lovers trash California where if you look around we have a ton of knives all over the place. Hell they even sell crappy knock offs at local gas stations.
I can find at least 6 dealers within an 80 mile radius that have every Spyderco model available plus are stocking Gold class Benchmade. Not all are rip offs either. EDCknives.com is located in Oakland look at their inventory! That does not count places like Bass Pro and REI who have plenty of lower end quality knives; Griptilians, Buck, Gerber...
Anyway rant over.
In Oakland there is the Shaver and Cutlery shop on Telegraph in Oakland, it is small but you will find plenty including things you think would not be available; even discontinued models. See Rex.

No so many gun shops but lots of blades.

I can mention two other shops, Castello, 2279 Lincoln Ave. San Jose 95125 & Redwood Trading Post in Redwood City.

Yes, and the rest of the country is filled with mindless hicks that are still stuck in 1949..

Castello's might have been the place I was trying to remember. A small place in San Jose with a load of knives. The owners is/was a classic motorcycle collector. I picked up a limited edition Al Mar Talon there.

Other than Manteca, which is way and the hell away from SF, where do you find a Bass Pro in CA?

Right. And that's a 9-10 hour drive from SC. Not the best recommendation. Even Oakland sucks, because, really, would you want to go there? From SC? Anything futher out than Santana Row is a waste of time.

But it's not too hard to find a place that sells knives. Even Big 5 discounts the heck out of something every week.

I know Santa Cruz extremely well. What I said is factual. What you say is factual. What I said about Carmel is factual.

The point was that Santa Cruz is as anti-weapon as anywhere in the US and nothing there is remotely interesting for someone into knives or firearms.
