Going to be in San Francisco in a couple of weeks. Only there for a short time and on business - so not a lot of spare time.
I will be staying at the Westin on Powell St. Are there any knife shops close at hand? TIA

Unfortunately, San Francisco is lacking in retail stores. There are a couple of cutlery stores in North Beach on Columbus that mostly carry kitchen stuff. The only knife store that carries a significant non-kitchen selection is We Be Knives at Pier 39 (www.webeknives.com). Unfortunately, the shop is very small, and gets a lot of tourist traffic, so it isn't the most relaxed shopping experience. If you're going to be in the area, stop by and have a look.

I'll second We Be Knives. They had some pretty good stuff there last time I visited, including, oddly enough, some Benchmade balisongs(aren't they illegal to sell in PRK?). Lots of traffic there, though.

The best or at least my favorite in the Bay area is TAD gear in Oakland it's maybe a half hour across the bay bridge. The City is lacking in the knife department.
