I've never been to a knife show before and I'm going to try to make it to the NYC show this weekend.I'm sure it will be nice to meet the makers and other forum members.Does anyone find good deals at the shows (as far as prices),or is it pretty much the same as whats on the net? Thanks.

It has been my experience that prices are pretty much what you would be charged on the Net. But, you get to examine your purchase for fit and finish, and you most likely will be spared tax if you pay cash. The NYCKS is terrific. Enjoy yourself.

The show is great. You get to look at the most beautiful knives and get with people who really know what they're talking about. But most of what's on view is custom, which is generally big money, so discounts aren't really an option. :)

But we can all get together for Bladeforums Live! :D I'll be there Saturday.

The customs are great, and most of what is there for the upcomming NY show. They pretty much have the same prices on the net and at the show, which as Esav said is generally pretty big money.

Production knives on the other hand will tend to be a little higher than what is on the net. This really isn't much of a factor at NYCKS as I don't really remember seeing many production knives. Spyderco is there, and generally go for MSRP or a bit lower. Some makers that have done costum collaborations might be there with collaboration pieces at there tables too. That is about it really.

Really though going and getting to handle so many great knives, talk with the makers and other knife knuts is a great experience. Generally on a custom knife you will pay the same as mentioned, but be spared shipping charges so you come out ahead a bit there.

Thanks for all the replies,I really hope I can make it.I look forward to seeing you all there.

Show is worth attending, even if, as has happened to me, you purchase nothing.

What time? Bringing Ken?

I hope to make it on Friday evening, and will be there on Saturday with my usual accoutrements.

Any plans as to where to meet? Look for tables outside the exhibition rooms?

Look forward to seeing my fellow forumites.

I have not found any "great" knife deals at shows, though there have been a couple of OK deals. If you have attractive trade fodder you might bring some select pieces.

I traded into a beautiful Crawford Leopard with anodized handles and mammoth ivory inlays at Blade West with a well-known purveyor; couldn't have afforded it if I had to pay cash, but it was a good deal for both of us.

Matt is correct. In past NY shows there have been purveyors present to buy/ sell/ trade quality knives. It' s a good opprtunity to move out the old and get something new. But understand that you will rarely get an even trade in terms of money value on your knives. Unless you' ve got something really hot like a Loveless or an SR Johnson!

On some occassions, you will find an online dealer who carries a full line of productions. This isn' t always a given since the 2 NY shows are titled "custom" shows. Or even a few of the big name production companies such as the already mentioned Spyderco, Benchmade, and Emerson may be present. There are a few related threads on this forum that shows a link to a list of attendees. Esav, do your magic here. :)

See y' all at the show, hear? Y' all know where I' ll be. ;)

Nakano brother, I know you quite awhile. That Chinese cowboy thing just aint working for ya:D

Show costs generally preclude discounting, it can cost $2-3000 to attend a show like NY with air fare, hotels, meals and show space.

Most of the makers I know justify going to shows as holidays or a chance to meet and greet their customers but almost never as a profit making opportunity.

As ErikD says it is a good place to handle the knives before you purchase.
